QuestionNot clear on the answer. Is this really the i7 8550U (4 Cores) because their web page says this model is a 2 core U processor they don't have any i7 8550U's on there page? So how did best buy get it before they are even selling it?

- Answer Yes it does use the 8th Gen processor and has 4 cores. Afaik as of this writing the only model that has the 8th Gen CPU is the Notebook 9 Pro 15" 16GB RAM 256GB SSD NP-940X5N-X01US (the Gen 7 model is NP-940X5M-X01US). Who knows what the marketing and distribution strategy is at Samsung? Neither is a strong point of theirs! If you read the review by Jeff he states the processor is an 8th Gen in the performance section of his review. I have the earlier Gen 7 model and I'm really happy with it in every respect. The build quality is first class, performance is swift and the S Pen experience is amazing only Wacom devices are on par or slightly better. The only improvements I would want would be a larger M.2 NVMe drive (user up-gradable so not a big deal) and better control over the S Pen button assignment. The S Pen is heavily associated with the silly Samsung Air Command app, and there are no options for the user to edit the pens parameters, which is causes issues if you want to use art related apps that can make use of the button etc. (there are work rounds but it's a pitb!). It would have been nice if Samsung upgraded the USB-C port in line with the latest specifications, such as 4K 60Hz, ideally with thunderbolt. One complaint from many owners is the less than stellar battery performance. Personally I think the battery life is pretty good for a lightweight high spec 15" 2 in 1 device. I like this machine so much that I'm seriously considering buying the new Gen 8 version, and selling my three month old Gen 7 one. The extra cores should help boost performance in Blender rendering and other 3D apps that can make use of all the cores. I would highly recommend the New Gen 8 version for people who want to make full use of the S Pen (Wacom EMR tech) . If your'er not a heavy pen user there are probably better alternatives for similar prices, that have Thunderbolt, full 4K 60Hz video support and better dGPU performance, at the expense of the amazing drawing capabilities the S Pen delivers. If you're an artists you will need to buy one of the full sized S Pens and/or the Staedtler Norris digital pencil.

- Answer On the laptop I have it was not even a samsung ssd. It was a hynix ssd. While hynix is still a good quality ssd manufacturer, it's weird that it's not a samsung chip used on my laptop. As for the speed, it is a similar 500 MB/s ssd. It's a SATA III. The rumor is that NVME is actually supported on this laptop, but Samsung customer support denies it. but there is a youtube video on by mike mu on swapping the ssd to a samsung 950 pro on the previous generation of the same lineup. BUT, tbh, you really won't need an NVME ssd. Why? This is a laptop with portability in mind. As such, its performance is not workstation grade or gamer grade. If you want raw performance, you need a laptop that weighs 5 lbs+ and has fancy GPU's. With this in mind, SSD's capabilities will most likely to not be the bottleneck of your laptop's performance. I mean, you might do some very short video editing, sure, but hopefully this isn't going to be your main rig for 4K video editing... Or you might use it for quick computation, but this laptop shouldn't be your main high performance compute machine...

QuestionIs there a screen flickering issue with the 2018 model (NP-940X5N)? Some recent Samsung laptops have PVM flickering issue at 200Hz when screen brightness is set below 99%. Despite invisible to naked eyes, it could cause headache/irritation to some users.

- Answer The screen was flickering at first for me. One way to solve the problem is turning off "Panel Self Refresh". Another is to ensure you've downloaded the Samsung-specific Intel Graphics drivers, and not the generic ones from Intel.

- Answer you would have to separately purchase your own ssd and swap it out. I believe bestbuy does offer that service... for a price... SSD itself should run you around $170 before tax for the samsung 850 evo 500gb m.2 2280 ssd. I don't know how much it costs to have bestbuy install it for you. But the swapping shouldn't be that difficult to do it yourself if you have some experience tinkering with electronics. here's a youtube video. <go to youtube and search "mike mu notebook 9 pro ssd"> Not including the actual link because that might trip up the filter on the comment section... the video is for the previous generation, but the current generation has the exact same chassis/structure.

QuestionHow are the speakers on this computer? Heard they were not great. Can you improve them?

- Answer The speakers aren't the best but they certainly aren't the worst. You can watch a movie without a problem the volume is acceptable although the dynamic range isn't great especially with respect to low end response. Low level background music is okay if you want some noise while working, but again dynamic range isn't good - highs and lows lacking. If you watch movies etc. with the unit in presentation mode the speakers are upward facing which changes the dynamics somewhat but nothing amazing. You can tweak the EQ to help improve the sound. Compression will also help even out the dynamics to a degree, which can help reduce some of the harshness and lift the low end. A small bluetooth speaker is a useful accessory which I use regularly with my N9P. Room is limited so installing/hacking in upgraded speakers would be tricky imho. The speaker placement and grills (small area with tiny holes drilled through the metal base) aren't going to be easy to improve. I doubt it would be worth the effort given the constraints acoustically and physically.

- Answer I am getting 8-10 hours with office-style use. I run at 40-50% brightness and do not notice any screen flicker.

- Answer There is a Notebook 9 Pen 13" refresh due in Q1 2018 which will have the Gen 8 processor. Unfortunately it doesn't have Thunderbolt (USB-C Gen1 only) and no dGPU (Intel Integrated only). Here's a link with some details * digitaltrends.com/computing/samsung-refreshes-notebook-9-ces-2018/ * . Personally I would go for the Notebook 9 Pro 15" if you can deal with the slightly larger size. The 15" isn't that much bigger than the 13" the biggest difference will be shorter battery life but has dedicated GPU and larger screen obviously. The information on the refreshed 13" isn't clear on the amount of RAM - if it is limited to 8GB of RAM then the N9P 15" becomes a far better option with 16GB of RAM. I have the older Gen 7 15" Pro and it's a great machine. The Gen 8 would be a nice improvement. The pen experience on these devices is amazing!

- Answer This has a dedicated 2gb radeon amd graphics card. That is totally separate from the processor on the motherboard. Its not an integrated graphics card like the intel hd 600 or others.

- Answer The machines weighs about 3 lbs 12 oz, I'm not sure what the total weight is when combined with the external power supply though.

- Answer Yes, the Thule case sold at Best Buy is great. I have two of the 15" Samsung laptops and also two pf the Thule cases. Everyone agrees it is the best case.

- Answer A 256GB SATA SSD is the biggest capacity available in a stock Notebook 9 Pro. However it's easy to upgrade to a faster and larger NVMe SSD yourself. If you check through the Q&A'a you will find links to an SSD upgrade guide on Ytube. The video is in two parts...part 1 covers cloning the drive and part 2 covers the installation and cloned image restoration.

- Answer The Notebook 9 Pro 15" supports 802.11AC using Intel Dual Band Wireless AC-8265 hardware. The lack of USB-C Gen2 or better still Thunderbolt is very disappointing and probably a deliberate choice by Samsung to prevent making the device more future proof (my conjecture). If having a really good pen experience isn't your primary requirement then there are other manufactures offering similar machines with Thunderbolt/USB-C G2 at similar prices and specs, at the expense of pen accuracy and responsiveness. I really like my Notebook 9 Pro 15" it performs well as a daily driver and the pen is a pleasure to use. The alternatives as of this writing would be the Wacom Mobile Studio Pro which would be twice the price and far less functional as a daily driver, and the HP Zbook X2 which has a 14" Wacom EMR enabled screen, and is twice the price of the N9 Pro 15" if you go for the high spec model Zbook.

- Answer this model is whisper quiet...as far as improvement, I'm not sure what you are referring? If you mean battery life then, yes, battery life is better but screen is FHD not UHD.
