With digital media the only real protection you have is by making multiple copies. I have pulled old hard drives out of filing cabinets that are 10-15 years old, put them into machines and found MOST of the data to be perfect. However, I've also found corrupt files on hard drives that have only been there for about five years.

It depends on a lot of factors like where and how you store the drive, how careful you are when mounting and unmounting it from your computer and luck. It may last 30 years or 1. There is just no way to predict the lifespan of any single drive. Your best bet is to back up all your files so you will have them in multiple places. External storage is cheap compared to just a few years ago. Buy 2 of these and use one as a backup for the 1st one.
