• yes, it's just external storage. if you buy one, just be sure to format it for mac before you use it (using disk utility)

• you won't get the best performance as you will have to connect it to a USB port. The iMac probably only has USB 2 which is much slower. But, if you upgrade in the future the USB 3 or Thunderbolt port will give you much better performance.
