You can remotely boot up your computer from an external HD. Yes, an external HD that also has firewire is faster. Good luck.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Use SuperDuper backup software, and yes, your external drive can boot your Mac. SuperDuper makes a bootable backup as opposed to TimeMachine, which does not.

Test boot the clone drive by holding down the Option key during Startup and selecting the clone drive in Startup Manager window that appears before switching all operations over. After that, you can choose the default drive for booting. Either replace the internal drive before the major project or get a 2nd external drive to back up to. Relying on one hard drive is foolhardy. USB 3.0 is plenty fast enough. If your MacBook Pro does not support USB 3.0, then yes you should get a Firewire drive. Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. It was designed for storage. It might or might not work. I'm pretty sure it won't operate programs from the hard drive. Files yes.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I may be full of baloney but this is my opinion: A good mac repair place should be able to replace your hard drive and transfer your files in less time than buying an external drive and doing it on your own. And if your hard drive is failing it may not be as friendly to doing a lengthy transfer. I purchased this for a backup drive so cannot tell you if it would work well in place of your drive, but my guts tell me that if your hard drive is not working properly it may not allow you to access the backup drive.....and you say you are already backed up so it would be redundant. It should be possible to get the drive replaced without leaving it for a week!
