• Unplugging it while it's mounted is not a good idea. You should select the option to safely disconnect hardware before disconnecting.

• possibly. It's never a good idea to unplug a hard drive while it's being accessed or used.

• If you unplug a USB drive (any kind) while the host is writing data to it, that data will be corrupted. Use the 'eject' function in Windows and Linux OS and WAIT UNTIL MESSAGE APPEARS that it is safe to unplug the drive.
