“XFER files to it on Ethernet, then play thru USB to TV? I want a drive that I can transfer media files onto from my other computers on the home network and then play them to one of the USB ports on my TV as I'm now doing with USB flash drives.”

This product will not work in that capacity since its a network drive. You can set up media DLNA streaming with it, however you will need a smart TV or a media streaming device hooked up to your TV i.e WD Live TV in order to stream media files from it to your tv. That's what I do and it works great.

However, any HDD whether it is SSD or mechanical won't normally work out of the box as a USB device. You would need to purchase a separate enclosure to install the SSD into that then provides the USB output you need to attach it to a computer, smart TV, etc.
