“Does this device require a PC to act as its interface, or does it contain all the necessary firmware and software to act as a standalone file server? ( I already have a PC acting as a file server and want to eliminate it)”

It doesn’t contain the firmware needed to do the actual cloning on the dock . There are free cloning softwares online if you only look it up. And you can use this device on Mac or pc. Or anything else for that matter with a usb slot.

Many wifi routers have a USB port you could attach this drive to which could then be accessed in the same way you might hit your file server, via network path.
