They are good for both. The sound is colored, but it's not colored enough to matter. If you're super duper professional, you'll want something like the Shure 840s or the sennheiser HD600s. These will work in a pinch. They are also fairly excellent for gaming. The soundstage is fantastic and the spacial awareness they provide is very above average. For $80, you could do a lot worse.

These color the sound far too much to faithfully mix, master, edit, or record with them. You may need to look elsewhere for studio monitors, BB doesn't really sell headphones like that. Your local music store should have some decent studio cans.
