Hi Kevin, It depends whether you have a standard TV or high-definition TV (HDTV), this is normal operation. This is sometimes referred to as a letterbox effect. This is because the video was recorded or is being broadcast in a wide-screen, 16:9 aspect ratio. To fit the entire picture of a wide-screen movie on a TV and maintain the proper dimensions, the size of the movie is reduced.
