No, the HDTV does not need to be a smart set. The "smart" functions are all run through the player!

The Blu Ray player is smart and will let you go online like to Netflix etc. You have to have a newer TV set though that has an hdmi jack on it. Forget about even trying to use an old tube TV set. The graphics you need to see on Netflix and other Internet stuff is too fine and unreadable on an old TV set. Also you need descent WiFi for the bluray to work well.
