• Closed captioning is typically provided by the content supplier. This unit accesses that when it's available. For instance on Netflix or most any dvd or Blu-ray. A quick Google search yielded no players that do this on their own. I've noticed that some shows are not captioned and even Netflix and Hulu cannot provide captioning in these instances.

• Hi Kathy, the unit will automatically display Closed Captioning if it is encrypted in the BluRay disc. Closed Captioning doesn't have anything to do with the HDMI cable. Thanks! ^Ron
