Yes, you can use both either a Voice Operated Recording function (VOR) or start the recording manually

It will record even when there is silence.

You have to push record button, it's not voice activated. Pause button is an option while recording - just push record button and it will pause.

As far as I can tell, it only records when you press RECORD.
