    Unfunctional Beyond Device Itself

Although the quality of recorded sound on this device is excellect, it cannot be transferred to any other device. No transferring of files. What is recorded STAYS in the device. On top of that, if you record several things, or various things, it is a nightmare to try to find it again. No fast forward. Also, you cannot add files to this for future use....no in or out of this device. I know it has a purpose, but is so extremely limited, it should be discontinued as a product totally. While this device now collects dust, I purchased a similar device from Sony that you can transfer files off of and it is what I need. Sadly the advertising for this does not allow for rotation of the product. Since I previously had a similar product that you could transfer files, I believed it was the same, as it has the same appearance from the front. With a proper photo that I could rotate, I would have never wasted my time or money on this. All thumbs down on this product.

Probably good for use at meetings

I bought this to record lines from a script (for a play) that I was trying to learn. First problem is that the directions on how to use this are only found online unless you want the bare bones directions which don't say much. Second problem is you can't rewind to a certain point (like you could with, say, a tape recorder). I guess if you just want to record a meeting, let it record and hear it later, then it's a good tool. But for recording things where you might want to backtrack at different spots of the recording, I'm not sure how that's done. I think if you're really good at technology, you'd probably have less problems than I've mentioned here. For $35, I'm wishing for the good ol' days of just a regular cassette recorder. They were cheap but highly effective and uncomplicated.

    Decent recorder. Deceptive battery life.

I purchased this recorder to use for lectures. I've used it for a few months now and it's a decent recorder for the price, but it's not without its limitations; exporting and recharging being the two two. You should read the FAQ at a minimum before deciding on purchasing this unit. My biggest complaint, and why I wouldn't recommend it, is the deceptive battery life indicator. I've started out with a new set of batteries before a two hour lecture only to see the battery life decrease to a single bar. The next day when I was to review the previous nights lectures, the battery indicator was now at three bars. I've seen this pattern of up and down for awhile now. I'm always a bit nervous if the battery will last for the entire class. So far it always has, but I still find myself frequently looking at the indicator. I may start looking for something with better battery life and can export audio files.

We bought these for an oral history project. I have used other Sony recorders for years and they worked well to record and archive interviews. Our project bought three more. These, however, do not have a USB port. There is no way to archive anything recorded on them. We found this out after the interviews and when we started to set them up for archiving. It's too late to return them. A waste of money for our purposes. The fact that there was no USB had never occurred to us, so it wasn't something we checked before buying -- of course, now we see that fact is not mentioned in the description.

    Solid recorder for the price

I'm a reporter and I bought this to record interviews. I considered a recorder three times the price based on reviews, but once I got into the store I couldn't bring myself to fork over $90 when this model was staring me in the face looking no different. Works great and so was the price. I've even used it to record phone interviews and the sound clarity is just fine (I always make sure I turn the volume all the way up on the recorder). I must admit I haven't used any of the filing features, as I erase the recording once I've transcribed it, but for my basic needs, this works well.

I went into Best Buy looking for an "old school" tape recorder. The hard case with tapes that you place on the spindles. The sales associate pointed me in the direction of the recorders, but I still didn't see what I came for. I was staring right at something called a digital recorder. This recorder is very user friendly, easy to carry when you're on the go and the sound is crystal clear. Everything I needed and more. I highly recommend this product.

I had bought this to replace a cassette recorder that I had for many years. I planned on using it with a telephone pickup to record business phone calls on my home phone. It did not preform. After recording, I had to turn the volume all the way up during playback, and still could barely hear what had been recorded. Also, I knew this did not have a USB port to transfer files to a computer, but this was not a deal breaker. I did returned it to Best buy for a refund. Otherwise this is probably a descent recorder, but you can use a smart phone to do the same basic recording.

Pros: here is how I have put it to use: 1) Wanted something handy to record my kids first words. I was able to record it among and other moments. 2) Handy way to get a nice read out loud --> record --> repeat for technical material where there is no convenient text --> speech. Cons: 1) Background noise as the mic settings was extra sensitive to ambient noise. The noise filter was able to cut it out to an extent. 2) No way to transfer audio content (but this was in there in the specification)
