The thing you're describing is a airplane headphone adapter jack. It is so you can listen to entertainment on a plane.

I believe you are referring to the earphones charging cradle. This is an essential component being that it is the only way to charge your earphones. The cradle connects to your earphones via magnetic ports and to the wall or power source via micro USB. Hope this helped.
