A:Answer Yes, it's just the stereo itself, no speakers with it. As for which are the best speakers, a lot of that is personal choice. If you want a full experience you'll want Highs (tweeters), Mids (typically the door speakers in a vehicle and sometimes behind the headrests of the back seat in sedans), and a source for bass (these are usually 12" speakers encased in a box with or without ports). In order to support all of those you'll want to get an amp. If you just want clarity to hear the sound crisp and crystal clear, focus on the mids & highs buying quality speakers. If you want everyone to know you're coming, focus on the bass & amp. Personally i just got a pair of JBL's with this stereo because I'm just wanting a nice radio, nothing spectacular, just nice. I've had a full system with 4-12" speakers in a sealed trunk, and I've had a full system of Bose speakers before, both have their ups & downs.
