How does this speaker compare to the Harmon Kardon onyx 4 in sound quality/volume? null

Hello Nate426.
I love both speakers, the harmon bass is off the chain. If you love bass than this is the speaker for you. Now the Sony has bass but the clarity in the music ,you can hear violins, guitars and keyboards clearly. It depends on what song is playing on the Sony where the bass comes across really good even with the extra bass button. 
I've purchased 4 Sony X40 and 2 Harmon bluetooth speakers. Its your preference on how you listen to music. 
But as I said I love both. I hope this helps

I have onyx also and this speaker is very impressive. I’m liking the sound quality of this speaker over my JBL extreme & charge 3 as well! I am a bass person who like highs as well and this puts out both & nice sound quality ! Nice bass !!
