“If I take out the left earbud and leave the right earbud in the charging case will the left earbud connect to my phone and actively play music? I have the first generation and this option deos not work; to get the left earbud to play you need both out.”

Yes you can use either earbud independently while other charges.

Yes, you can leave one in. I often only use one when Im at work because the active noise cancellation is so good. I wouldnt be able to hear anyone talking with 2 in.
