• No, you do not need a smartphone. You can stream from a computer or smartphone but most of the time you will likely just use the apps within the Roku.

• This device uses Wi-Fi ac to stream from any internet based app, like Netflix, Amazon Prime, CBS All Access, etc. It can be also plugged into and powered by a display which has HDMI and USB ports.
