Hi JimJohn. The DVR needs to be connected via network cable to your router in order to give it internet access if you wish to view remotely on your phone or update its software. Alternatively, we sell a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi Antenna as a separate accessory (model code SWACC-USBWIFI) which can allow you to connect wirelessly without the cable. If you won't need to view it on your phone you can also choose to operate it as a local closed system without internet, in which case you would view the cameras on a monitor/TV connected to the DVR box. - SD, Swann Team
