“I'm planning to connect the SL-1210GR turntable to my Sonos 5 speaker via the aux port. Does the turntable have to have an on-board pre-amp to work with just the speaker aux connection vs wired to a receiver?”

The Sonos FIVE feature set includes: “3.5mm line input for voice control device, turntable (with built-in phono preamp), or portable player” The SL1210GR does NOT have a built in phono preamp; it has phono level output connections requiring a separate phono preamplifier. The FIVE and the SL1210GR are a mismatch in more than just connectivity. The FIVE is better suited with budget turntables while the SL1210GR is more suitably connected to high end audiophile components.
