TiVo mini does not require you to pay a subscription fee. It uses the subscription from the device it is connnected to

But note that the mini requires a tivo recording device like a tivo premier, roamio, or bolt, which does the actual tv program recording. They must connect to each other over either ethernet, or over coax cable using "moca" technology. Wifi is not supported because of the increased possibility of drops in signal causing picture freezes.
