TiVo Mini brings the multi-room experience to the TiVo Universe. The TiVo Mini is a great companion piece to bring the TiVo experience without having to add multiple Cable Cards and Multiple TiVo Service fees to different rooms of your house or apartment. TiVo Mini is compatible with all TiVo Roamio's (Roamio OTA and Roamio Basic requires a MoCA bridge to use the MoCA enabled TiVo Mini# and Premiere 4 and Premiere XL4 #You can still find these on sites like eBay for a really in expensive price). Having the ability to record shows on a central TiVo box and stream them to other rooms #Up to 6 Mini's can be connected to a single TiVo Roamio# with the ability to watch Live TV and your recordings, schedule season passes, and do pretty much everything you can with your main TiVo box. The only caveat to the TiVo's MoCA setup #which is a great way to hook up your TiVo Mini to your main TiVo box# is you will need a MoCA POE #Point of Entry# Filter to keep the MoCA signal inside your house. I have had my TiVo mini for 2 months now and I love it, the low profile combined with the RF remote #replaced the RF remote with the Slide Pro remote) makes this a win for those who want to hide their cable box behind a closed cabinet door or even behind the TV, or mounted on the wall. If you own a TiVo that is compatible with the TiVo mini it's a no brainer as for the price it includes Product LIfetime Service, potentially saving $15 a month on TiVo service fees.

Great Tivo Extender on Moca Network

      Posted
      Ntr0s

I wanted to install a MoCA network in my home. My living room entertainment equipment was connecting to internal network via wifi and I was experiencing frequent connection drops and lots of "buffering" issues...so annoying. After the MoCA network was properly installed (remarkably easy to install and configure by the way) including a Point of Entry (PoE) filter; internet connection quality on the devices connected the MoCA network, over COAX, improved dramatically. Once MoCA was running as intended, I picked up this Tivo Mini for my home (upstairs) office. Tivo setup was easy enough. I did have a problem with the last step of the Tivo configuration. The last step attempts to connect to the Tivo DVR on the same MoCA network. The Tivo simply could not find my Tivo Roamio DVR. I had activated the Tivo Mini via my Tivo.com account and read that the Tivo Mini device would be activated in 24 hours. If the Gods gave me the ability to be patient, I would have accomplished very little in my life. I thought maybe the Tivo mini could not connect to my Tivo DVR because it wasn't activated, and I think I was right. I found a possible workaround, bypassing the 24 hour "wait time" online that included the following: # Activate the Tivo Mini on the Tivo Website. # Wait a few hours before setting up the Tivo Mini. # Access your Tivo DVR, go into settings and force a connection to the Tivo Service. # Reboot the Tivo DVR. Reboot the Tivo Mini and restart setup. The last step of configuration successfully detected the Tivo DVR on my MoCA network and complete access to Live TV, Recorded TV, Plex and my awesome Pandora Radio subscription. If you have a DHCP server and can assign static IP address's by MAC Address, You might also want to try to configure static IP addresses on the Tivo DVR first, verify network functionality, then run through the Tivo Mini setup entering the static IP address configured for the Tivo Mini. You probably do not have to assign static IP addresses to either device. It was an extra step I took & works great.

Talked with sales man Brent at tulsa 71/169 store and he is a cord cutter himself and has the same system ( tivo plus mini), so a trusted him and cut the cord, and boy am I glad I did, it has saved my family $117 a month and I feel we are getting more quality programming now than with cable. we got the lifetime service so all we pay is $99 a year to prime and I watch any thing i want for free. If it is a series that is not free it is normally 19.99 on average for 12-15 shows so that's about $1.25-1.57 per show so may monthly cost to watch tv is ($99 for prime per yr) $8.25 a month plus + 4 (series like ax men) $1.57 x 4 = $6.28 and they air weekly so that would be times 4 weeks = $25.12 so $8.25 (prime)+ $25.12(series)= 33.37 a month to watch more programming than I was paying for cable. I have had the system for a month and a half and I love it we watch 5 hrs of tv a day and I could not go back to cable after this. I have had "o" problems and just love the user friendliness of the system

      Small but Powerful

We have multiple televisions in our home. I purchased a Tivo due to getting poor recording options and space allowed from my cable company's DVR. If you own a Tivo then these Mini's are a great addition. Compared to the price of the main DVR, they're worth the cost. They extend all of the recordings of the main TIVO into the room they're placed in, and you can record and watch Netflix, youtube, etc on these just like you can on the main box. A word of caution though: please learn about Moca networking before finalizing your purchase. You need either a Tivo box that is capable of working as a Moca Adapter (Roamio Plus/Pro, or Bolt) or you must hard-wire connect it with an Ethernet [internet] or co-ox [moca network] cable. The setup took about an hour after you call and get the box activated, and download all of the updates. When I first set it up I was a little scared something went wrong .... I followed all of the directions, but it couldn't initially find my Tivo. I was using the Roamio Plus as a Moca Adapter, but found that I had to restart the Tivo for some reason and then it did manage to locate the main Tivo DVR. Since then, all is working fine. I love that I purchased this little box. It has a very small footprint, and was worth the price I feel. It is helpful to know that it doesn't need a monthly subscription service unlike the main Tivo.

Finally replaced my cable box in the bedroom with a TiVo Mini. If you have a TiVo Premier, Roamio, or Bolt, setup should be relatively painless. Here's my experience: SETUP: - I installed a MoCA filter where the cable enters my apartment. This is highly recommended if you live in an apartment/condo building. Even if you live in a single-family house, you should install this filter to eliminate the possibility of interference with your neighbors' cable system. - If your house is wired with ethernet, you can use that instead of MoCA (assuming both your main TiVo box and the Mini can reach an ethernet port). - If you use MoCA: you'll have to connect your main TiVo box directly to your router with an ethernet cable (you cannot use wireless). Go into the TiVo settings, enable MoCA in the network settings, and you're good to go. - Connect the Mini to a cable outlet, plug it in, and follow the setup instructions. Once that's done, the experience is seamless. The Mini is just as fast as my Roamio Plus and can view live TV and recordings with no issues. The guide, menus, remote control functions, etc. are all identical to the Roamio. I love that the remote is also RF-based like the Roamio, so no direct line-of-sight is required. If you want to extend the TiVo experience to another TV without buying another costly box with service fees, the TiVo Mini is perfect.

Good interface, so so hardware, so so performance

You read all the review about how good this as additional unit on top of existing main TiVo machine. Interface and navigation are excellent. Let's get to the downside right away: - TiVo HDMI hardware has issue. Roamio Pro, Tivo mini, whatever, they will fail in a year or two. Do research and this is common issue. Under warranty for mini it is $30 to replace it. Consider this on top of the price before buying. -Using TivO with Cox requires big chunky decoder box and some strong signal for that decoder. Without it channels are not authorized. So if you split the coax feed make sure you have easy access to play with it. - Tivo mobile interface doesn't work, choppy or completely not available most of the time. And only broadcast recording can be viewed from this app, copyright restriction. -Tivo guide is not your cable provider guide, when cable provider change their channel list, or title, your scheduled recording will fail, and you will scratch your head to find where it is since from TiVo interface all looks good. But after updating and (hopefully) Tivo sync their channel list you see ..oh it's moved, oh the title is changed, etc.

I've used TIVO since the very beginning. Like most TIVO add-ons, I found the TIVO mini requires some patience to setup as it is not what I would consider plug and play (however, not as challenging as the TIVO Stream). Having said that, once you work through the steps to make it work, it delivers what it promises, an affordable TIVO experience on a separate TV in your home without purchasing another TIVO unit or another monthly or lifetime service plan. It essentially "borrows" one of the tuners on your other multiple tuner TIVO unit. The TIVO mini does not work via WIFI, rather it requires you to have a direct ethernet connection to your Mini, or to enable a MoCA network over your coax cable which is likely to be running to your TV. Since I had neither running to the TV where I planned to use the Mini, I did manage a successful hookup by just moving my WIFI booster (which does have an ethernet port on it) next to my TV and it worked fine. However, this may not work for everyone. Bottom line give the Mini a try if it fits your needs and you enjoy the challenge.

Setting up the required MoCA network was a trial

I cut my cable and put up an outside antenna through which I am getting outstanding reception in Houston, TX. I decided to use the R-6 Coax cabling in my house to set up a ROAMIO with four MINI's in order to have access to five TVs through the one antenna and ROAMIO. Instructions for doing so on the TiVO web site etc. were woefully inadequate and needlessly so. Setting up the MoCA network was a headache because the ROAMIO unit does not make this possible and instead you have to buy an additional "Bridge" box. Then the only diagram I found on the web had the bridge plugged into the one and only ethernet port on the ROAMIO. WRONG. When I finally ran a second ethernet cable from my internet switch everything finally worked. I love my TiVO system and would have given it a 5-star had they had better and more complete instructions on the internet for setting up the ROAMIO box for a MoCA network through which I could use the four MINIS! After 10 days of work and research with a lot of intuition and guessing I finally got it set up and working no thanks to TiVO's very inadequate instructions!
