“I play video games on my laptop in my room and my router is downstairs. I have horrible reception since I’m not plugged into an ethernet.If I plug this into an outlet in my room and then use the ethernet cord to connect my laptop, would connection be good”

Theoretically, it may help; however please bear in mind that WiFi extenders repeat the quality of signal they receive. If your router's signal is poor in your room, there's a chance the extender may repeat that same quality of signal. That being said, if the extender can capture a better signal than your laptop, you may see an improvement. Regards, TP-Link Support
