There's a smell at first, but not any worse than other similar products. I've worked in several fitness studios and health clubs and notice whenever new rubber weights arrive they have a temporary smell. We bought these for our home gym and left them in the garage for a few days to air out.

There was no rubber or any other smell from the weights. I have used Clorox multi cleaner on other rubber weights and it removes the smell immediately.

I haven't noticed any smell at all. Overall I've been very pleased with the quality of these dumbbells.
