“If you mount this tv on the wall, does it result in diminished sound quality since its speakers are located on the rear? In other words, with a wall mount, are external speakers a must-have for this tv?”

I don't understand the concern about the sound for flat screens, I keep hearing that, really, there is no way to get decent speakers in a flat screen, and the display is undercut by bad sound, much better to get a sound bar or even a Bluetooth speaker (its got Bluetooth). Anything is better than the OEM speakers, which are good for the news channels only.
