The actual refresh rate is 60hz. Many companies use various terminology (Vizio uses effective refresh rate) to describe how the TV performs with backlight scanning. As someone who owned the 2016 M series previously, I do not notice a difference between the two. But it will depend on content. If you use motion interpolation (soap opera effect), then this TV will not allow you to turn that on. The same is the case if you plan to use as a game monitor for 120hz. If you game with home consoles, they can't reach higher than 60hz, so this is not an issue. When it comes to 24p content, the Vizio displays can adjust the 60hz refresh rate to 48hz to properly show 24fps playback, so blu-rays will look stellar without concern.
