“So after assembly, the empty space below the desk measures 34" x 28" x 17", my bookshelf that I want to put under the desk is an inch wider then that. Is the desk being held by the side units? Could I put these up a little wider apart?”

Hi Rob, The ladder desk and each storage bookcase stands independently. The desk is being held up by the side frame of the ladder desk piece. Unfortunately, none of the pieces can be set up a little wider apart.
