QuestionTo be able to backup my external hard drive with Carbonite I need a FAT32 file system. Does this WD easystore 8TB have that? It comes up when I shop for FAT32 but I'm not sure. Thanks, Lynn

- Answer No power switch. But it is green. It will power down when not being used.and when you attempt access there is a pause while it spins back up and powers on.

QuestionCan I use this hard drive for Windows XP and does it have to be formatted first before using it?

- Answer This drive comes initialized as an NTFS drive which post dates XP and is not recognized by XP. You would have to reinitialize it as an MBR drive and then reformat it but the problem is that XP can only address a maximum disk size of about 2TB. There used to be ways of tricking XP into being able to use all the space on 3TB and 4TB drives by creating additional partitions but I don't know if that works anymore. Basically, I would not recommend buying this drive for use on Windows XP.

- Answer Yes it can be. If it is formatted in ExFat ot will be compatible with both Mac and Windows. If it is NTFS you will need to format it ExFat or what what ever Mac uses.

QuestionWhat is the mbps transfer speed?

- Answer Well the theoretical max is 500 Gbit/s or roughly 500 Mbps. I saw theoretical as I have not ever gotten close to that amount with my transfers. Others may have gotten closer. The highest I have seen with my test on my equipment is 163 Mbps. I'm using a laptop so someone might be able to get higher speeds on a tower PC.

- Answer I have a few Western Digital external hard drives (My Book and Easyshare 3.5 inch models that use its own power supply). The power supplies for them works with 100-240v. I have the U.S. version. No voltage converter is needed. Just use an adapter for the wall socket if needed.

- Answer Not in the way you intend. You need a Tivo expander drive with an eSata port. Be cautious though as through the years those connected drives have been known to be unstable. What you can also do is hook up this or any drive to your pc, install the tivo desktop app and store recordings on your computer once the tivo is full. Look up Tivo community forums for your more specific Tivo needs.
