True and False. You do need to be connected the the drive's hotspot in order to use it wirelessly, however the drive has a bridging mode that allows it to connect to other wireless networks. You can bridge the drive to your wireless network and be able to use the drive and Internet at the same time.

If your device has network priority settings you can set the drive as a higher priority and when you turn it on it'll he drive, maintain Internet connectivity and then connect back to the network after the drive is turned off.

The WD Passport is connected to your mobile devices via wifi and can be connected to an external wifi signal such as your home wifi.
