It's unclear what you mean when you say "regular" external hard drive. I'm going to assume you mean the WD Easystore 5TB External USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive, since it is so similar to the My Passport series. Other than slight differences in the physical dimensions of the drive, the major difference between them is that the My Passport 5TB External USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive offers 256-bit AES Data Encryption and password protection with included WD Security software. The Easystore model does not.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.One thing I noticed is that the My passport has a 256-bit encryption, what ever that is. I don't just it or have need for it. If you fear losing your drive you can lock the information. I just sent my drive back for replacement. hopefully I get it back. I used it for over a month then it started getting super slow.
