You run Disk Utility. It's an app in the Utilities folder. You can find that in Finders "Go" menu. If you have trouble with Disk Utility I'm sure someone at Best Buy can give you a quick demo. You never need to install the drive maker's software. Never. If the drive comes with files, you can safely delete them. Note that reformatting deletes all files.
