• I store all types of files on it and use it with my laptop to travel with. I move files back and forth from my desktop.

• It could be used that way, you don't need any backup software to use. Plug-it into the usb port on your laptop or computer and you're set

• If you have a "mirror" of your startup drive copied to this one, or you have loaded your system onto it from a download/CD, it can serve as a startup drive. Since USB 3.0 will still be slower than an internal drive (but not by much), you might find that a consideration. I use mine (have 3 backup USB's) for backup of files as well as a second startup drive for emergencies.
