“When backing up the computer, does it store that update in a separate file or does it only retain one back-up copy and overwrites previous ones?”

• It will keep all the back ups until it is full, then it will overwrite the oldest files with the newest ones.

• Your software determines whether there is an overwrite. I use TimeMachine. My ssd is 1 T, so I don’t expect an overwrite for some time.
