It's main purpose is to be "always-on". Desktop hard drives don't have to run all the time.

A WD Purple drive is designed for use in a surveillance DVR. It is made to be on 24/7 and for sequential read/writes. It uses a different command set to minimize dropped video frames. A desktop HDD is designed for random read/writes and power cycling. A Purple drive would not perform well, have a higher likelihood of data loss and may fail sooner in a desktop. Buy a Blue or Black for a desktop.
