Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I don't think an internet connection is necessary but you'd need to check the user manual for your specific make and model. The newer units allow you to directly connect to your smart TV (or smart DVD play or similar device), as long as you have a wireless environment (i.e., an environment where you would be able to surf the web if only you had an internet connection). You still need to provide access to your content, but assuming you have available input you should be able to get that with a wired connection to your hard drive. If it helps think about what happens when the electricity goes out in your house. As long as everything is plugged in and those plugs are wired to the fuse box, and that is wired to the grid, when the electricity comes back on, so do the lights. But if a lamp is unplugged from the wall, it's not going to come on with or without the electricity. Your WD TV is the lamp. The question is whether your lamp is plugged in or not. (i.e., whether your device is new enough to have the direct connect feature). Good luck.
