“I am buying a dishwasher and the ad says that it is 34 1/2" in height but list the dishwashers cutout dimensions as being 34" even. my question is how can this be: dishwasher 34 1/2" high and the cutout height listed as 34" even-- how will it fit?”

Remove the wheels in the back and wind the feet up in the front (near the door) will give you one more inch of clearance or the over all height will be 33 1/2"
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I got my dishwasher about a week ago. It is 34 inches high. Then there are 2 clips to fit on top of the open dishwasher. They will bend to adjust and are to be fastened with screws into the underside of the cabinet wood. Those clips are set for another half inch on my dishwasher because my opening is 34 & half inches high. The clips stabilize the dishwasher. I think you would need at least 34 inches and a little more would be better so it will be easy to set the clips.
