Yes, you need both. Some cycles require an optimal blend of hot and cold to make good on the promises Whirlpool makes about the effectiveness of all those cycle options. And since the water is gently dispensed from the top of the load, near the soap tray, less water is needed to saturate the clothes. There are other design reasons to require less water, but I can tell you, don't worry!

Please try again later.you need both hot and cold hooked up as a cold wash will still use some hot to even out the temp. this washer will SENSE the amount of water it needs to get the job done instead of filling the whole tub. that's how high efficiency washers work. make sure you use HE detergents.
