• Since the unit uses a heat pump to heat, the exhaust hose is required for heat mode.

• I am pretty sure yes, since it is reversing the way it works. When in heat mode it will vent cold air and you do not want that while heating. The same if you are cooling the room it will vent hot air outside. It must vent, if not the effect would be hot and cold inside neutralizing any use of the device to alter temperature.
