• A subwoofer is not required, and in fact the receiver has an "extended bass" option that will send more bass to the five surround speakers if you don't have a subwoofer. It is, of course, not the same as a good sub, but a nice touch if you don't want to use a subwoofer.

• It uses a separately powered subwoofer. I bought the Pioneer SW-8MK2 because they had one in stock. It seems to be a good match for this system.

• It has an input for a subwoofer (RCA) but not necessary to operate.

• No it does not require one, but one can be used. I would just connect speakers to the front and surround connectors.
