YES, you can HOWEVER be aware the if you use the speakers in two locations, the receiver will play in 3.1 (3 front speakers) in one room and then the two speakers in the other room using the rear surround connections. You CANNOT play 5.1 speakers in one room , then 2 more in another. When I purchased this receiver I was not aware of this. I have speakers on my patio but still want the 5.1 in the living room. If you play all 5.1 speakers , then the speakers will also play on the patio. If your set up is only 3.1 in the living room and two speakers on the patio then this will work. You will need a 7.1 channel receiver to do both 5.1 and separate speakers on the patio. This was my issue but I love the receiver. Hope that helps.
