Q: will this receiver play a bluetooth speaker

A: Yes just follow simple directions

Q: what exactly is 4K Ultra HD pass-through ?

A: 4K Ultra HD pass-through receives super high-definition resolution video and passes it to a 4K compatible monitor. This ensures compatibility with the latest super high resolution video formats. This unit supports the latest HDMI® standards thanks to the transmission of 4K video at 60 frames per second (pass-through only). Fully enjoy the high definition video quality of 4K without degradation along with HDCP 2.2 that fully complies with the latest copyright protection, a standard for 4K video transmission. It also supports the wider color gamut of BT.2020 pass-through.

Q: can I hook up my turntable with this receiver, does it have to be digital or will a older analog work?

A: I believe that this receiver does NOT have a phono input, so to hook a turntable up to this receiver directly the turntable would need to have a built-in phono pre-amp (most older turntables don't have a built-in phono pre-amp, since most older receivers did, but most of today's lower- and mid-priced receivers no longer do). If your turntable doesn't have a built-in phono pre-amp, you can buy an external phono pre-amp, to which you'd connect the turntable (I believe using RCA jacks) and which you'd then connect to one of the receiver's inputs (likely the auxiliary input). You can buy a decent stand-alone phono pre-amp for as little as $80 or $90. They're fairly small; Best Buy sells a Pro-Ject Record Box E Phone Preamp, which is only about 5" x 5" x 1.5".

Q: Does this receiver support HDR

A: Yes, this receiver supports HDR. To enable support for HDR, you have to do the following, which is not documented online or in the owner's manual, and which I had to find out by contacting Yamaha's support team: "There is a setting in the advanced setup menu of the receiver, 4K mode. The default is Mode 2. It should be set to Mode 1 for HDR. To access this setting, power the receiver off. On the front panel of the receiver press and hold the STRAIGHT button, then press the POWER button on the front panel once, and then release the STRAIGHT button. Press the left PROGRAM button on the front panel of the receiver to select 4K Mode. Toggle the STRIAGHT button to select Mode 1 and then power the receiver off." I asked the Yamaha agent why it's set to Mode 2 by default, and he replied "Mode 2 is more stable for a wider amount of HDMI cables. However, Mode 1 is what allows for HDR."

Q: I have a Sony X85C television, is the receiver compatible with my TV? Also, should I buy any cables to hook it up or it's included?

A: 1) Sony X85C television compatibility: a) The Yamaha RX-V481 specifies that it supports 4K Ultra HD signal and HDCP 2.2 copyright protection. The Sony X85C appears to fall under this category. I do not have a 4K television but the receiver passes the Comcast signal flawlessly to my 1080p Toshiba 50''. b) The Sony X85C specifies HDMI-CEC to allow control of other devices with your Sony remote. I have this functionality with my Toshiba. Since I have hooked it up to the Yamaha with HDMI (and set the HDMI command option to 'on' in the Yamaha setup) I can control my receiver with the Comcast remote. When I turn on my TV, it sends a signal to the receiver and turns it on automatically. The volume on the Comcast remote then controls the stereo receiver volume, not the TV's internal speakers. When I turn off the TV, it automatically turns off the receiver. Quite convenient, actually. I do not know the full extent of receiver-control possible with your Sony remote. I am still discovering the extensive features of the RX-V481. 2) Cables to hook up: The Yamaha RX-V481 does not provide cables. You will need an HDMI cable to hook up your TV. You will require an HDMI connection to get 4K resolution. Also, if you connect the HDMI first, you can configure and tweak the setup of the Yamaha viewing the TV screen instead of the just the front receiver panel. The receiver DOES provide: a) AM antenna b) FM antenna c) YPAO microphone The YPAO microphone is very convenient for speaker configuration. You plug it into the front of the receiver (while off), place the microphone in your TV viewing area right behind where your head/ear would be, then turn on the stereo receiver. The Yamaha RX-V481 will show to your TV screen that it is about to configure. It will send a series of test sounds to your individual speakers then automatically adjust the speaker distance/sound setting. Just a side note: The Yamaha RX-V481 comes with network connectivity, both Ethernet cable and WiFi. I connected to my WiFi network and the receiver immediately pinged the internet and found a firmware update. Once connected you will have access to all internet radio streams. Also, with Windows Media you can setup your PC to act as a music server. I can access all the music on my office PC from my front room (and view it on the TV.) Hope this helps. Bruce M.

Q: does this set have two zone or multi room capability?

A: Other answer is slightly incorrect. If used in Zone mode, only 3.1 is available to Zone A (not 5.1).

Q: i know it says it is network "capable" but with out using bluetooth, will i be able to hook the receiver up to my netwrk wirelessly and stream music from my laptop through the receiver?

A: The Yamaha RX-V481 receiver comes complete with both RJ45 Ethernet cable connection and a fully functional WiFi connection with attached antenna. Network connection can be established manually or automatically (WPS button) and supports WPA2 security. The most convenient configuration process is with a TV attached by HDMI for viewing but you can also do it by viewing the front receiver display. The RX-V481 supports several music playback options including streaming from your laptop. If you have a network connected Windows laptop, open Windows Media Player and select Yamaha RX-V481 in the "Play To" list. This sets up Windows Media as a music server. Check your version of Media player to find where this setting is. Once connected, just keep Windows Media open and you will be able to select/play your laptop's music through the RX-V481 receiver while viewing the album/song name and graphics on your HDMI connected TV.
