I recently went into Best buy just to browse because I had some time to kill, and I generally enjoy shopping there and to my Surprise they had Arrow the complete first season on blu ray on sale, so I decided to buy it even though I was only about 13 episodes into the show on Netflix. I am very happy with this purchase, because it tells the story of an underrated comic book hero oliver queen/the green arrow. Although they did change some of his origin story for the most part it was pretty accurate, there are a few things I didnt like about the show like how they call Thea (his little sister) Speedy, even though in the comic books that is the Green Arrow's sidekick's name. But they did get some other things right like how the Character Malclm Merlyn (in the comics his real name is Arthur King) is Oliver's arch nemsis who is known as The Dark Archer, as well as Meryln the magician and Merlyn the Magninficent. I thought it was very interesting of the TV shows interpretation of how the dark archer beats oliver in the show, in the comics the Dark Archer challenges him to an archery competition in which he wins, however on the show they made it different and a little more interesting. Some other things I did not like about the show is Oliver's sister on the show she is a very whiny brat and very spoiled, and like I mentioned earlier they changed his origin not by much but just a little, in the comics Oliver is on his boat but he gets drunk, and someone pushes him off of his boat, but in the show the ship he is on with his father hits a storm and is destroyed and Oliver and two others survive, I don't want to spoil anything so I'll leave it at that as far as the ships goes. In the show they also have their own interpretation of Slade Wilson's origin (deathstroke) who is actually The Green Arrow's villian and not Batman's which almost nobody knows that. But this season starts off with an incredible pilot episode and when the end hits, you really want to watch the next one, and that is the way the whole first season is! Although both seasons are 23 episodes long and they could be shorter if you're a superhero fan or a comic fan I would say buying this first season is worth the money, at times you will feel "stuck" like man, I'm only on the 12th episode!? other shows like breaking bad only have 12 episodes in a season! if you decide to hang in there the show is really worth it! I really enjoyed it especially when the dark archer meats the Green Arrow/Oliver for the first time, Oliver asks him "what do you want!?" and The Dark Archer replies "what any Archer wants... to see who is better!!" I liked that part very much compared to their original meet in the comics. This show has plenty of Action, and makes you want to keep watching. I highly recommend this to anyone, but especially comic fans and superhero fans. I've had coworkers who know nothing of comics watch the two available seasons on Netflix and they also enjoyed it very much!

Much better than I expected

I was one that did not have high expectations for the series, but am very impressed at how it has turned out so far. The character (and overall storyline) is very dark. Much darker even than version of the Green Arrow played by Justin Heartly on Smallville. This version of the character made that one look like a boy scout. To say he is morally ambiguous is an understatement.
The series starts with Oliver Queen being rescued from an island he had been marooned on for 5 years. The show actually tells two stories. In flashbacks we learn what happened after the shipwreck and the events that unfold on the island. In the present we see his transformation into "The Hood" a vigilante on a mission to take down the criminal elite in Starling City. He is also re-integrating into "normal" life, reconnecting with his friends and family, while having to lead a double life to protect those he cares about. Throughout the first season they introduce many of the DC comic characters along the way
The key to the series is the wonderful acting. There are really no "A list" actors in the group, but many of them are recognizable from other shows. Stephen Amell does a great job playing the brooding role, and yet having to incorporate some of Oliver's past playboy attitude. All of the supporting actors, both series regulars and recurring, bring a lot to the show, and the writers do a good job of giving good stories to all the characters, so it is not just about Arrow out chasing down bad guys. Some of the stories in the first season get resolved, others are left open. So there is a lot to work with going into season 2.
As far as this set goes, it comes both on Blu Ray and for some reason DVD. There are 4 blu ray discs and 5 DVDs. The show looks and sounds great on blu ray as you would expect. My only complaint about the blu rays is there there is no season mode. So even if you use the play all option, if you stop in the middle of an episode it does not pick back up where you stopped it. As far as extras go, there are commentary tracks on select episodes, deleted scenes for many of the episodes, a 30 min "making of" feature, an 18 min feature on the stunts, a panel discussion and gag reel. Definitely enough to keep those who like the bonus material happy.

I had low expectations when I decided to download the pilot episode. After the utter failure of 'The Cape' and other superhero TV shows ruined with poor acting, poor action and plots that could have been written by a 10 year old, who can blame me for expecting Arrow to be another loser. However, I actually came away impressed ... and I am not that easily impressed.
First, the selection of Stephen Amell as Green Arrow was excellent. I was worried the role would go to a male model more concerned with being pretty than being a hardened man on a mission. With Stephen Amell as Green Arrow you get a guy who comes off more as an MMA fighter, which makes Arrow so much more believable. The action scenes are crisp and effective. Arrow starts out with grit and has an edgy quality that keeps you interested. The plot contains plenty of room for mystery and the dialogue/acting is pretty good. It makes no difference if you are a Green Arrow fan or not, this show is about enjoying a unique action hero. Maybe a bit too much glorification of 'taking the law into your own hands' but, OK, maybe we'll see if the main character grows beyond this.
This appears to be a Canadian production. That may explain why the producers of Arrow seems to be taking more risks in making a DC comic action hero into an actual action hero (and showing a bit more respect for the intelligence of superhero fans young and old).
I look forward to seeing more from this series. One thing the producers could add - a touch of humor. Nothing sets up an audience for action and dramatic twists than a touch of humor (the Firefly TV show first comes to mind as well and the most recent Avengers film). And, that's why I went with 4 stars instead of 5.
Like super heroes? Check out Arrow. Let's see if we can keep this on the air a few years.

Surprisingly great show for a "lesser" superhero

I was skeptical going into this show. 1) It was a lesser known superhero, 2) I recall a time when the only really good superhero tv shows were animated, and 3) it's The CW, the only great show they had prior to this one was Supernatural. This show kinda breaks the mold. The first episode is a little awkward in that Green Arrow does not have the previously established pop culture recognition that other superheroes like Batman Superman and Spider-Man do, so going in a little more blind about what to expect makes it a little awkward; additionally the actors don't have previous portrayals of their characters to glean from so it takes about one and a half episodes for them to get comfortable with their characters and make them their own. But when they do? Shoot, this series is well worth the watch. The writers do an excellent job weaving their plots, foreshadowing events and portraying the varied psychological dynamics of the characters. They also do a better job than even some movie franchises do in terms of addressing issues such as "How is this guy funding his vigilantism under the radar?" and "How does he deflect suspicions that he's the vigilante when the vigilante conveniently first shows up a few days after he re-emerges?" That fearlessness in confronting these sorts of questions head-on instead of glossing over them helps make the final product even stronger, and the actors do make the characters their own and make you care about them. Well worth watching.

This is a fantastic show. I saw the first two episodes and decided to pick this up to check out the rest. I was not disappointed. Based on the DC comics character Green Arrow, it is about billionaire Oliver Queen who gets stranded on an island for five years. Finally making his way back home, he is out to save the city that his father failed. While doing this we get insight on what happened to him while he stuck on the island, what his intentions are, and the intentions of those he is pursuing.
The show can be cheesy at times, but I didn't really mind. There are some interesting story lines as well as plot twists. The action is great and looks great in this blu - ray set.
If you're into comic books, I highly recommend you check this one out. If you're not, you should check it out anyway. There's a little something for everyone, and I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

My initial television introduction to Green Arrow was with Justin Hartley's version on the series "Smallville", which I liked very much. Both the show and his acting.
Anyway, I really wasn't too interested in the CW's bringing on "Arrow" with a different actor playing him and a whole different vibe or feel to what I was used to. So I didn't watch any episodes until I started watching CW's "The Flash" and they had a few crossover episodes which then introduced me into the Arrow show and so I decided to give it a shot.
To my surprise it has been a very good addition into my tv series collection.
I should point out that I accidentally purchased the dvd and wound up purchasing the Blu-Ray at a second hand store days after already opening the new dvd(meaning I couldn't return it).
So the Blu-Ray looks and sounds great with some minor extras(deleted scenes and the like).

Not your typical television series, especially for one that is based on a comic book character! Arrow features the story of Oliver Queen, the son of a privileged family, who returns to his home after a long absence away, only to find the city and the people within it have changed drastically from what he knew. Oliver struggles to find his place in the city, as he has been irrevocably changed as well. He resolves to use his experiences to forge a better city, but this often puts him in situations where he is torn between his old life and his new one. It's an intriguing story-line that is told via flashbacks to show what happened in his absence, that tie thematically to his experiences in the present. The story is supported by well choreographed action scenes and great character development. It's an interesting mix of action, drama, and intrigue. Very highly recommended.

I have really been digging all of the comic book superheroes that have been brought to life on the big screen in the last dozen years or so. I had been wishing and wishing up until a couple of years ago that we could get something on the small screen...and here we have Arrow!. I love this show. It's dark, gritty, suspenseful in its inaugural season, for sure. It's neat to see how it has been adapted to television. I like how they are beginning to develop the characters already in this season. Makes me want to get to know them more. What really keeps me coming back for more is all of the flashback scenes that show what happened to Oliver on the island. It's fascinating to see what changed a spoiled rich kid into a finely honed killing machine with a highly developed sense of justice. Keep up the good work!

This show has a great cast and great plot. I'm not a DC comics fan, with the exception of this show. Stephen Amell brings believability to the character of Oliver Queen, Katie Cassidy (you might recognize her as Ruby from Supernatural), brings depth and likability to her character, Laurel, and the remainder of the supporting cast is terrific. The drama, suspense, and action sequences are well planned and choreographed.
About the only thing that irritates me sometimes is the flipping back on forth between his time on the island and present day. While it builds the story, it can also detract from the current situation the characters are in.
All in all, I'm looking forward to season two on DVD!

I had my reservations about this show. My fear is that it was meant to be a teen heartthrob show, I mean look at the cover. But the old adage that you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover rings true here. This is a fantastic show with a great story, excellent acting, and engaging action. The show could have done with a slightly higher budget but it is on broadcast TV so it's to be expected. This show is great for fans of Green Arrow and those not familiar with the character.

I love Stephen Amell and all the characters. In my opinion the casting is perfect, there is never a dull or boring moment, great story, lots of action, normal people dealing with things in their lives, while fighting against the evil, to make things better. It was hard for me to wait for the next show, so I bought all the shows that are out, and have a pre order in for the next series. I guess you could say I am probably the biggest fan, and I hope it does not change into something else, I hope it does not fail me in the future.

If you grew up watching Smallville, & love the tonality of the Nolan Batman film trilogy; then this show is for you. For fans of DC Comics & the character of Green Arrow, there are plenty of easter eggs within each episode. Drama, & action filled; "Arrow: The complete First season" is a great show to devote your time to. Well directed, well acted, well written & well produced, each episode is wonderfully composed with a brilliant score by Blake Neely that fit well with Stephen Amell's portrayal of the Emerald Archer.
Hope you enjoy.

I give this show some good props. The era of superhero shows came and went with Heroes and Smallville. They ran on long past their prime and slowly became muddled and predictable. This show takes a chance on a main hero from DC, but is usually always eclipsed by The Bats or Supes.
Characters are great and develop at a decent pace. Some situations are forced and seem trite, but thankfully they are few and far between.
The show starts opening up the world to more DC heroes and villains as the season goes on and Barrowman is fantastic Merlin.

The first season of Arrow is a great origin story of the Green Arrow. It is interesting to see the show's simple beginnings before it grew into what is now known as the Arrowverse. This complicated hero is a mix of Batman and Robin Hood, but at it's core is a story about a once spoiled, rich boy who is forced to grow up, survive, and deal with great loss. He must transform and adapt to his surroundings in order to return home and learn to become the hero he was meant to be.

Arrow is about billionaire Oliver Queen (Amell) becoming a Batman-like vigilante known as "The Hood" to save his corrupt city after being stranded on an island for five years.
Amell is perfect for the role as he has the charisma & athleticism to be the playboy womanizing Queen & then The Hood. The rest of the cast, except for Katie Cassidy, is solid with David Ramsey as Queen's bodyguard Diggle & Susanna Thompson as Oliver's mom who has some dark secrets. For a CW show, the fight scenes & action are well choreographed & intense. There are also several cameos of other DC Comics' heroes & villains throughout the season. The Undertaking plot was always interesting & had a surprising payoff in the finale.
The DVD extras have a couple behind the scenes features that are decent. I'm just disappointed there wasn't one commentary on any of the 23 episodes.
This is one of my favorite superhero/vigilante TV shows. I already like it more than Smallville.

I bought this and the other two seasons during the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Movie Money promotion for $14.99 each, and they all came with $8 movie certificates which I used to see BvS multiple times! I still absolutely love the first season, and even though I had watched it a few times before on TV/Netflix I couldn't wait to watch it on Blu-ray after I bought this set! Don't get me wrong, this show is GREAT! But, yes, there is one, it plays out more like a soap opera with bits and pieces being revealed along an entire season, and just when you think you've got "it" all figured out, they throw a major wrench into the plot leaving you whirling and wanting more.
Do yourself a favor, Order ALL available seasons at once so you won't have to wait to watch the next season. Believe me, you won't want to wait even for next day shipping.
