I paid a little under a thousand for this, and by the time I added Microsoft office and a two year warranty, I was in the 1400 range. So far, the ASUS laptop has been worth it, especially now that I have upgraded to Windows 10. Very fast. Love the lighted keyboard. But still getting used to the touch screen. Love the 10 key numerical function on the right. Love the thinness. It does not have a VGA output that some projectors need. But it does have hdmi output which most new projectors require. Has 3 USB ports, and a cd/dvd drive, and there was a miniature subwoofer that came in the box which was a nice surprise. I chose this over a Mac because of price and compatibility even though Macs are known for media projects. I do a lot of video and audio editing and this ASUS has not let me down yet. That is all.

    Amazing laptop with 1 flaw.

Purchased on 4/24/15 This was a kind of spur-of-the-moment purchase after my previous laptop started acting up. I do a lot on my computers, so I needed something I could rely on and my old machine just wasn't reliable anymore. After poking around on Amazon and Bestbuy.com, I came to the decision to buy another Asus. I had actually picked the model with the 4th-gen i7, but when I got to the store to purchase, they had this model in stock on sale for $50 less than the model I had chosen. So I walked out with it feeling quite good about it. And boy was I right. This laptop is TOP. It's a very solid machine with an all-metal type body. The keys are placed very well and typing feels great. The keypad is small but somehow manages to be perfect. The screen is super bright and text is crisp. Windows 8 runs and feels great but I'm really excited to see how it handles Windows 10. Video games run SO smoothly. I play Skyrim and AOE through Steam and both look just wonderful. The sound is the best I have ever heard from a laptop. And with the included subwoofer, it BOOMS. Now to that flaw I mention in my headline....The keypad. Before buying, I had read a couple of reviews saying that the keypad was terrible, or finicky or just weird. After buying, I didn't see the issues and blew it off. It's now been about a month and a half and I've started to see one problem that went from being non-existent to extremely present. The right click button. This keypad does not have standalone left and right click buttons. It's one whole track pad with areas sectioned. It's gotten so bad that I can right click over and over again and still not get a right click menu. The whole bottom of the track pad acts as a left-click! It's extremely annoying when trying to correct misspelled words or trying to open links in another tab. This is actually the reason I came here to write this review. Just to warn buyers about this one little problem I've run into. If you plan on using a mouse 100% of the time, then you won't even notice the issue. I use one about 50% of the time and the other 50% this is a HUGE issue for me. It's the only reason I've docked the review one star. It's the only reason I'm here writing this review. It's the only problem I've encountered and as far as I know, the only issue with this machine PERIOD. Honestly though, don't let this discourage you from buying this thing, it truly is a great PC. Buy a mouse and enjoy.

The Asus Q551LN-BSI708 is a 2-in-1 laptop that I would call a 5 hour workhorse, because 5 hours of continuous work is about all you’ll get on a single charge. This is probably not a good choice for the road warrior, unless you have frequent access to an AC outlet. That is probably about the only bad thing I can say about this laptop/tablet. Within the 5 pound, 0.9 inch thick frame of this laptop is the newest mobile Intel 5th Generation Core i7 processor (i7-5500U), and a dedicated nVidia GT840M (2GB) graphics card. The graphics and processing power of this laptop are the two main reasons I bought it. I do astrophotography so I needed something portable that I could connect to a telescope to do imaging, and then process those images with graphic imaging software. I also needed something with a lot of storage space, so the included 1TB (5400RPM) hard drive, 8GB of memory (upgradable to 12GB), and DVD drive made this the perfect choice for me. I ran a Passmark benchmark on this laptop and got ~4000 points. From my research most 2-in-1 laptops were in the range of 2500-3000. No doubt my score was the result of the dedicated nVidia graphics card, which if you’re a gamer you’ll be able to enjoy high settings and resolution. I played Battlefield 4 and got 40FPS on medium settings and resolution. This Q551LN also includes three USB 3.0 ports, which is unusual because every other 2-in-1 I considered only had one USB 3.0 port, with the remaining ports being USB 2.0. There is also a full size HDMI output port to connect to an HDTV or monitor. A few other things that make this 2-in-1 a winner for me are: illuminated keyboard with a 10-key numeric pad on the right side, 3-cell 48Whr battery, Gigabit Ethernet, AC Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, and IPS touchscreen with 1920x1080 resolution. I highly recommend this laptop to anyone who can live with the 4-5 hour battery life.

GREAT LAPTOP FOR THOSE THAT ONLY UPGRADE EVERY 3 to 5+ YEARS A realistic review by a baby-boomer...for baby-boomers You know who you are, those of us that don't need to buy the latest bleeding-edge PC every 12mos. We take care of our electronics but with PCs there's an obsolescence factor after multiple years. When we do spent our hard-earned cash we want to buy a reliable product that won't be obsolete in 3+ years. I upgraded from a 8yo Vista PC, but my background for many years was in computers so I can quickly acclimate myself to the rapid technology march. ASUS has built a strong reputation for reliable PCs to support families, students and professionals in completing many multimedia tasks. Check out reliability/quality surveys for the major brands, ASUS is always near the top. Hardware-wise this is an excellent mid-tier+ WinTel laptop: - The 1920x1028 ISP screen has a great picture unless you're viewing from extreme angles. But if you're trying to get that many folk around a PC's screen, just take a moment and hook your PC to the big-screen TV, everyone will be happier! Note the touchscreen's ability to zoom in to make text larger is great on those days you eye-sight is a little weaker. - The latest Gen5 i7 CPU with dedicated 2gb GPU provides increased efficiencies, and with 8gb of memory and 1TB drive it provides me with good processing speeds and enough storage for years of use. Its easy handled more intensive tasks like video-editing for me, but I'll admit I'm not using it like a true video-editing professional. I did not buy this expecting it to be a high-end gaming machine. If you're planning on the grandkids extensively playing the latest & greatest high-load graphic games, look elsewhere as you'll need a faster GPU and SSD storage. It will play many games with no problem, but there are certain games that require very high-end (read expensive) components to run smoothly. (note this model does include an upgraded 2gb GPU, while many in the same price range just use the integrated Intel GPU with no additional video-specific RAM). - Multiple types of connectivity allowed me to quickly connect to my existing wireless home and wired business environments: latest LAN 802ac specs for wireless, fast gigabit-speed ethernet for wired times, three 3.0 USB ports(including one that can charge my Smartphone, etc), HDMI port, and Bluetooth for my Smartphone. - It even has an internal CD/DVD drive (for those like me that still have extensive music CD collections). Note internal DVD drives are not being included in many laptops as they get thinner (although I mention this ASUS is still somewhat slim at just under 1"). - Comes with Bang&Olufsen audio software. The sound is quite clear, but not as loud as some higher-cost PCs. Also comes with an "adequate in-a-pinch" micro-subwoofer for those that don't already have a separate speaker/subwoofer set. But hey, this subwoofer is basically a freebie, and its even somewhat portable! The included Dragon Voice Assistant software has just rudimentary functions for emails and Facebook&Twitter...it sure isn't as robust as Apple's Siri. And while Windows 8.1 can initially be frustrating for those of us coming from Win7 & or older machines, at least 8.1's desktop feature reduces the "quantum lead" to Windows 8's icon format that infuriated so many. - Using as a laptop. Overall this laptop is really a good replacement for a tower desktop/large laptop. With the crystal-clear screen and the ability to enlarge text and pictures(if needed) I don't miss my older 19" screen at all. - Using as a tablet. With a 15.6" screen and weighing 5lbs, in tablet mode it maybe too cumbersome for some to carry often. Although at least it provides the tablet option so it lays flat on a table like you see in many of the PC commercials. - Using in tent mode. Its great for watching HD movies, either swiftly downloaded from the internet...or from that extensive(and expensive) DVD library many of us built in the early 2000s (note its not a Bluray player). At its $999 MSRP there are many options to consider, but it was still one of my finalists based on the included components and ASUS's quality. When BestBuy recently had this Gen5 i7 version on sale at $300 of MSRP (yep, a current Gen5 at 30% off), I got in line quickly as they sold out fast! As of late Spring 2015, that's a real deal! NOTE: BestBuy also still markets an identical 2014-version of this ASUS 2in1 laptop that utilizes the older Gen4 i7 CPU. The older version's model number ends in 706 vs this Gen5 i7 version's model number ending in 708. Based on the 400+ reviews here on the older 706-model, it was/is a solid laptop. This upgraded Gen5 i7 CPU version should be a little faster, a little more efficient power-wise, etc.

After much research, and a trip to the local BB, I finally bought this to replace an aging Sony Vaio top of the line laptop from 2010. Things that made me buy this: * Flip/touchscreen - multiple modes * WiDi+Bluetooth+Gigabit LAN+Wifi AC * Backlit Keyboard * Great build quality (no squeaky construction) * Price (w/Coupon) * USB 3.0 with Charging port * Dedicated Graphics * Upgradeability (RAM and HDD) * 5th gen i7 Things not-so-great after buying: * Heavier than expected (metal body to blame) * Asus warranty rules against upgrading HDD/RAM * Asus support can be spotty * Volume - rocker malfunction * A little too big for use as a tablet * Cramped Keyboard, especially numpad Overall, am very happy with the laptop. It was difficult to find a laptop with all the features I noted above. The price was right and I pulled the trigger. Have to see how well it lasts. Battery seems pretty good so far and bloatware is manageable. Waiting on Windows 10 to install while I write this. Given Asus' support, I am slightly apprehensive on that one.

Overall, this is good system: fast i7 cpu, 8GB memory, 1TB HD, great graphics, touch screen, multiple USB ports, memory card reader, etc . However - Windows 8.1 (which comes preloaded) is a pain in the neck. The desktop mode is superior for most applications, and some critical ones, like VLC, have problems in Metro mode. I wanted to play a DVD, using the recordable DVD drive included, but there was NO W8 app that could, including Windows Media Center. Of course, for $100, I could get the Microsoft Media Pack which had a DVD decoder (seriously??), but I thought I'd use my trusty VLC - well, the Metro version also failed - you cannot even access the DVD drive (google this to see why)! I ended up installing the W7 version from the desktop mode, and it worked just fine. So, my rating has almost nothing to do with the ASUS hardware, all my issues are with Microsoft Windows 8.1. I Also could not get my printers to work in Metro mode (they worked fine in desktop mode) and wrote several emails to Asus support and the printer manufacturers tech support. In the end, I figured it out myself. I upgraded the BIOS (using the ASUS-supplied utility) and that fixed the printer problem. I was somewhat surprised that none of the support people suggested that. I really like the speed of this computer, and I like the semi-tablet mode (the keyboard flips under, and it can be used like a tablet, albeit a heavy and thick one). Video and audio quality are decent, too. One other issue/advantage is the backlit keyboard. When it is truly dark, it is great for those of us who are not touch-typists. However - when the light is at a certain intensity, the lit keys actually blend into the silver-colored key tops, and are very hard to read. I would have preferred black keytops, as some other models have.

This is a great laptop. Windows 8.1 is easy to use and the touch screen is superb. I maxed out the memory to 12 GB. You need to replace one 4 GB module with an 8 GB module. The second 4 GB module is soldered to the motherboard. Also replaced the 1 TB hard drive with a 1 TB SSD. The performance is incredible. The I7 chip is fifth generation. All of my programs work with Windows 8.1. Had a slight problem with Pinnacle Studio 16 but was able to resolve it with help from a forum expert.

I admit I never heard of Asus, and when I went into Best Buy looking for a PC I really had no idea what was good anymore, I just knew I was never getting a Dell. I got great help from a couple of their associates and they gave me honest reviews on each one I thought I wanted. One of them said Asus is like the second best; so, I looked at it and got this one with the better graphics card. Yea, it cost a lot but after dealing with cheap dells, I was done making calls to customer support every other month and getting nowhere. You get what you pay for and this PC has made me very happy! I have not had any problems yet! I'm still learning the Win 8.1 and still considering the free upgrade to 10. Overall, if you are looking for a long battery, excellent response with the touch screen, great picture, tons of memory and an included speaker to plug into to give more bass and volume, then this is the one for you. I already got 4 of my coworkers hooked on the exact same laptop and they couldn't be happier! Oh, one last thing I do enjoy some WoW (World of Warcraft) every so often and yes, the touchscreen does work for the UI controls. Welcome to the new age!

I love my new ASUS laptop. My last ASUS was good for 3 plus years, which is forever in laptop years. And I did purchase another laptop in the interim and I hated it. When I saw this one with its backlit keyboard and an i7 system, NVDIA card, etc, well I knew I had to have it. Its fast, holds more than enough memory for me. I also like that I can jam on the keys and its not going to print 2 and 3 of the same letter. ASUS is a man's laptop in my opinion. They are sturdier, the keys aren't bunched up or oversensitive. The fact that this one doubles as a tablet and it cost half of what the current trending tablet costs, this is a win/win purchase as far as I'm concerned. The speakers sound great. I only use them for Pandora and Youtube but they seemed to have improved since my last computer. The video card is definitely adequate as I have yet to have any lag since purchase. I usually have 6 to 8 sites open and working out of at least 3 programs at once. I can switch the lighted keyboard off in the day and kick it on at night. No more pulling the screen forward so I can see the keys! The only thing I can find to complain about is the goofy AC adapter that's provided. Its a big heavy block for a plug that tends to fall out of the wall. This has to go. Luckily, I still have my old ASUS AC adapter and it works fine. If I could give this a 4.5 star review I would, but the AC adapter...that's no Bueno! That said, there is no other computer that I'd own.

Bought this for my son for graduate school and he is very pleased with it. He needed something fast enough to multi task, enough on board storage to carry around quite a bit of data, number keypad, and flip tent style feature when the desk is full of books/papers/coffee cups, etc . He likes having a DVD player/burner too. With all of that going on, of course it's a bit on the heavy and bulky side, but worth it for the features that he wanted. We have 2 other Asus laptops in the family which have been very reliable--one of them for 6 years--so we have some confidence in the brand.

We have been using the laptop for about a month now and it has been performing well. It originally came with Windows 8.1, but on getting it home we were able to immediately update it to Windows 10 without any problems. The main thing to remember with this item is this IS a laptop and not by any means a tablet replacement. It's a full size touch screen laptop that folds over into the tablet configuration. It's bigger and heavier than a tablet type. It also still retains the internal DVD/CD drive, which is a primary reason we purchased it. For our purposes this laptop was ideal. It's fast, has a good display that we can either run in tent mode or feed an overhead monitor, and we needed the DVD for classroom work and did not want to hassle with an external drive.

I did quite a bit of research on which laptop I should buy. Asus in #1 in quality and reliability. I love the touch screen capability--easy zoom in and zoom out for web pages with small print. Screen is very sharp with a great graphics card. When I'm reading or watching a video, I use the tablet function. Great battery life (about 8 hours). I did have the Geek Squad replace the hard drive with an Intel SSD 530 Series and it is screaming fast! Boots up in about 6 seconds or less. The only thing I don't like is how the auto-brightness sometimes goes too dark when it should be brighter. Overall I'm very happy with my purchase and I would absolutely recommend this product.

The laptop itself is great. The processor and RAM along with the Touchscreen was exactly what we were looking for. I slapped a SSD drive in it to further enhance the speed so right now it takes about 7 seconds to go from powered down to the desktop. The only negative I would say we have experienced is the mouse touchpad itself. It works well for me, but when my wife uses it (even after adjusting the click speed) it doesn't accept her clicks all the time. Have tried updating the drivers to see if that will help some.

I was able to pick this up on sale and with a discount for having windows 8 with free upgrade to windows 10. It is a rather nice laptop, the hinge feels incredibly sturdy. My only conflicts with this laptop are a matter of preference. I prefer the trackpad to be cetner this one is offset to the left resulting in many right clicks instead of left clicks. Battery life is accurate and the screen is great. Best stats for a laptop at this price point, and thats compounded by the fact that its a touch screen!

I purchased an HP Envy with 12 MB RAM and 1 TB hard drive two weeks ago and was excited to get such a powerful laptop at such a good price. However, I was very disappointed in the screen quality and experienced some glitches in how the laptop performed on a daily basis. I stopped by Best Buy to look at possible replacements, and found this ASUS Q551 on sale yesterday. While it has 8 MB of RAM vs the 12 on the HP, it's a much better computing experience so far - and, the sale price made it even better. I talked to Best Buy staff in 2 different stores and they each liked the ASUS over the HP. I made the switch (which was very smooth) and have been playing with it today. The screen is wonderful, especially compared with the terrible HP screen. Colors are sharp, crisp, saturated. The entire case is a sharp black, with silver keys and silver trim. The backlighting of the keyboard is nice, especially the ability to adjust the brightness level. Typing is easy; the keys have a nice feel and "give" to them. The laptop is attractive and lightweight. The keyboard is well thought out, and I always appreciate having the number keys off to the right. I like the use of the Function keys to control volume level, screen brightness, etc. I haven't needed it so far, but I really like being able to turn the track pad off if I need to do so. The screen is glossy, which can make viewing a bit challenging at times, especially under bright lights. But, it's not unlike a tablet or iPad, so I'm more used to it now. I like the ability to use it as a tablet or in display mode, but haven't tried it that way so far. I think Apple has totally raised the bar when it comes to packaging. Opening your new iPhone or iPad is a pleasure, with the box and inserts as well thought out as the device itself. The ASUS makes a much stronger effort in this direction, especially compared to the HP. Opening the package was fun! Sounds silly, but it make me enjoy my purchase much more than the HP. They thoughtfully include a small sub woofer to enhance your music/sound experience. It does give a bit of a boost to the sound quality. My only negative with ASUS so far is the lack of a significant "welcome" or "getting started" guide. It would be a thoughtful touch. The ASUS website doesn't make it easy to find a user's manual, either. I had to register the machine first, and then they sent me a link to a webpage dedicated to the machine. It's odd that I can't just search for the model number and head right to the page. There seems to be less "gunk" loaded on this machine, vs. the HP. It makes it easier to explore the other applications, since it's not quite as overwhelming. Overall, my first impression is really positive. I've owned Toshiba, HP, and Samsung laptops, but this is my first experience with ASUS. Hopefully it will be smooth sailing from here.

This laptop isn't a gaming laptop, but my goodness is it chalk full of features! Good things it has: dedicated graphics card. decent cpu (note: this is the low-power i7, so it only has 2 cores instead of the normal 4). touch screen/convertible. optical drive (these are getting harder to find). and most importantly: sturdy, all metal shell. All these things in one package make it a good deal by almost any standard. If you find it on sale for around $800, I wouldn't hesitate to purchase it. The only sticking point is the hard drive. It performs terribly and is the main bottleneck in the computer (Swap it for an SSD to realize this PC's true potential). I don't understand why PC makers insist on throwing 5400rpm hard drives in laptops with this level of performance. If they had anything better installed, I'd give it 5 stars.

This model was picked out by a friend's son for his high school graduation gift. Nice gift! Well, he did his homework. This unit packs a lot of powerful options into a small thin case. I was very surprised how much power it had and dedicated nVidia graphics. It feels well built to withstand the abuse a new college student will throw at it! My only complain revolves around the RAM. At this price point, it should come with 16GB of RAM (due to RAM's low price, even laptop ram). In addition, if they were not going to include the RAM, they should have included the option of RAM being completely removable. This unit (and the previous model) have 4GB onboard and a 4GB slot which you can swap for 8GB and give you 12GB. That is what I did, but in this day and time, two up gradable slots should be a norm on a laptop in this price range. Another ASUS quality product in my opinion!

I'll tell you this simply, especially for the many who would rather buy a Mac and get it over with, this deal with an Asus that has the speed of a MacBook pro along with getting the software I needed is still personally a better deal than buying the MacBook on its own. I know there's more to it than just making comparisons, however, with the gear I needed for graphic design and movie editing, getting more options for a fast and secure laptop as opposed to one that has a "better name" is the way to go if you are considering it.

I originally walked into best buy thinking I was buying a Toshiba laptop for school, but the guy that was taking care of me suggested this laptop to me because I told him I was getting into my own photography business AND it was on sale at the time. I also got a discount for being a student so I ended up getting this 2-in-1 laptop for $750!!! it was a great deal. :)

I would recommend this to a friend
