Fast and quiet...but I did swap for an SSD

So far I've had this computer for about 3 weeks and I love it. I bought it mainly for the 2GB of dedicated graphics memory so I could play Blu Ray movies on my computer, but the rest of the specs were just too good to be true so I went with this laptop. I was hesitant to buy an Asus due to QC issues I'd read about in reviews from other websites on other Asus model laptops (ex. glitchy trackpad, weak hinges) but I'm happy to report that this computer has exceeded my expectations. The computer feels solid and the chassis doesn't bend much (if at all) when I pick it up, even with one hand. The hinges also feel sturdy. I was worried about durability since other Asus laptops have noted hinge issues, but these are made of a metal alloy according to the media preview I saw in-store. It's got a nice responsive touchscreen and the keyboard travel is perfect--not too shallow. Although, it feels better typing with the aftermarket silicone keyboard cover I purchased for it. You won't find one specifically marketed for the Q524U since this is a Best Buy only laptop (or so it seems), but I rolled the dice that Asus uses the same keyboard for almost all of their 15.6in laptops and the one I bought fits perfectly. Now to the two most important questions on everyones mind: should I upgrade my SSD and how? First of all, YES --- upgrade your hard drive NOW. This laptop has a dedicated graphics card, 12GB RAM, Intel i7 chipset and a flip mode to tablet touchscreen. I figured, why have all that and get throttled with a 5400rpm dinosaur of a hard drive? I swapped it out and this laptop just screams "performance" now. First of all, you'll want to do a clean install of Windows. It's not as bad as it seems. First connect a USB flash drive to the laptop after you've finished the initial setup. I used a 32gb drive but I believe 16gb will suffice. Next, look for the Media Creation Tool program. Follow the prompts to create a bootable disk that will allow you to do a full install of the OS. I believe I didn't choose to transfer any programs because I wanted as little bloatware as possible. Once the program is done, power down the laptop and take out the existing hard drive. When you've taken out the screws, open the base by loosening the edges and start the prying action from the back at the vents. Once the plate is off, swap the existing HDD for the SSD. Put everything back together and reattach the flash drive. The screen will begin taking you through the prompts again like it did when you initially turned on the computer out of the box with the HDD. Once you start seeing the same prompts from earlier, you're good to go. I bought the 3 year GeekSquad service and they would have done the swap at no extra cost, but I wanted to learn how to do this myself and I'm glad I did since I'd like to do this for future laptops I may own. GeekSquad did say that if I screwed things up, I could've brought it in to them to fix. Luckily I didn't need them at all and Windows 10 does make the process pretty easy, especially with the Media Creation Tool. I'm attaching an image of what my desktop looks like after the SSD swap clean install of Windows--notice the lack of bloatware. Note, the keyboard backlight didn't work after the clean install but everything else did. It's a pretty easy fix. Just go to the ASUS website, find this model in the product support page, then download and run the ATK packet. After that you should be able to turn the backlit keyboard on and off using the Fn + F3/F4 buttons. The computer will find and install the other drivers automatically as long as you're connected to the internet when you reinstall the OS. If I had to list any drawbacks, it's that it's not my preferred sizing. I wanted something in the 14" range but the base on the Q524U isn't egregiously huge (not having a CD/DVD drive helps) and it doesn't weigh all that much considering everything you're getting. I would STRONGLY recommend this computer to anyone needing a laptop upgrade, and now that it's $100 cheaper than when I bought it, I may recommend it to myself all over again!

Needed a laptop for college and wanted something from Asus. This one had the best rating and I got it on sale for $800. I was a little irked a month later you could get for $750, but it happens. The touch screen is great! Makes it so convenient to click on things quickly. I like the keyboard as well and it's very comfortable to type with. The only thing is sometimes my right palm accidentally goes on the touch pad too much and the cursor moves. But maybe this goes away after getting used to the layout. It does take awhile to start up (~1 min), but I don't mind plan on upgrading to an SSD because I like the 2TB storage. The only real cons I found is the power key is so hard to press on sometimes. You have to really look at it and then press to make sure. Also, the whole laptop might look sleek, but it's a fingerprint magnet. I have to wipe it everyday or it starts to look too dirty. Maybe this is a plus though because it forces you to keep it clean. Battery life is also short. I found myself having to turn on battery saver so I can use it the whole day, but if you plan on bringing the charger everywhere I don't think it matters. This thing charges fast anyways (under an hour).

This was the first laptop I bought, so I thouroughly researched different ones and finally chose this one. I am so glad I did! It is better than I could have imagined and will be perfect for when I start college next month. It is not too heavy, the colors are amazing (almost looks purple in some lights), the graphics are clear, the touch screen is very responsive, the backlit keyboard (which has different brightness levels) is amazing, and the laptop is very sturdy. The only little complaint that I can think of is the battery life. It only lasts a few hours without battery saving mode on. I wish it lasted longer, but it isn't too big of a deal since I typically have it plugged in while I'm using it, so I'm not going to take a star away for that. I definitely recommend this laptop! A big plus was that is was on sale, plus I got an extra $150 off for being a student, so I got it for $750

I love the design of this laptop, its thin light, and powerful when working with video. Although it was marketed near a gaming computer I found it sufficent enough to perform the load I need it it to perform. Although I ended up upgrading the hard drive to a SSD, it was still fast and problem free out of the box.

I definitely love this laptop, its so lightweight and I love that im able to flip it in a different orientation and its touchscreen. The graphics are wonderful, much better than my previous laptop of 6 years from Dell. I am very pleased with my upgrade, I spent so much time trying to pick a laptop and I finally decided on this one. Best Buy.com definitely does wonders when searching for a laptop.

Needed to replace my desktop. This has it all (16 GB ram, dedicated graphics, solid state hard drive, 4K screen, Thunderbolt 3). Boots almost instantly. I've not had a touch screen before, more useful than anticipated. The 2 in 1 design is also nicer/more useful than I'd imagined - I use it on my lap as a tablet for reading the news, etc while watching TV on the sofa. Or prop it up like a tent at work to play music and keep eye on e-mail. Not a big gamer, but I do use intensive graphics and so far it has easily handled everything I've thrown at it, including easily driving an external 4K monitor. A little big to lug around everywhere, but so is every computer of this screen size. I'll definitely give the new Kaby Lake 2in1's a close look as they roll out over the next few months, but I think I'm going to be content with this purchase for a long time.

Very nice touch screen laptop with fast intel core i7 processor and great NVIDIA graphics. Folding into a tablet helps for using in class, though it can be a bit bulky. Other than that, it works great.

Purchased this laptop for my daughter who is going to college. It may be a bit large for her to carry it to the classroom, but this machine should last her a very long time. It is fast. It has a lot of storage. I like the specs of the product. She is not a gamer, and I realize this is a gaming laptop. She will use it for projects, photos, and for other software needs. She loves it. No problems at all with set up and ease of use.

I looked at a lot of 2-in-1 computers prior to this purchase. Processor is fast, but not as noticeable due to the 2TB standard HD. Great graphics, memory and speed in general. I waited for the right price for this one and find that it was worth the extra dollars. There are 2 things that would have made this better; SSD and Optical drive. I miss having the installed optical drive, but I see this is going away in general.

Was looking to purchase a solid laptop with several specifics: back lit keyboard, number pad, touch screen, 8+ GB memory, 1+TB HDD, i5+ processor, which this delivers. This is the first Asus brand I have purchased, previously purchasing Dell & HP, with which I have been very satisfied. I like the metal shell (vs. plastic) but adds weight. 17.3 display size is larger than I wanted and wish I'd stuck with 15.6. Main frustrations: PC touch screen stops working and system has to be rebooted to resume this feature. Mouse pad is hyper-sensitive even when adjusted. System freezes intermittently and has to be rebooted (have to make sure I save what I am working on consistently). I do have Geek Squad coverage so I will be taking in for assistance. Problem is, I need my laptop and having to leave it for extended period of time puts my work on hold. I like the technical details of this PC. The battery thus far is maintaining ~5 hour charge (over 2+ months that I have owned), the PC is not overheating like some reviews state, the processing speed is good, the keypad works very well. I would definitely recommend this laptop to others!

Love the chocolate color and gold hinges. Very fast CPU, love the backlit keyboard. Great for playing games as well. I play Diablo III online now that I have cable internet again. I have the graphics settings all set to the max and it performs seamlessly. I also play the Modern Warfare games without any problems on max graphics settings. Wish it had a longer battery life, last about 2.5 hours, but that's what you sacrifice when you want a lightweight laptop. The touchscreen is nice but I don't use it much as a tablet. just seems too large and I have an Ipad I can do that with. Overall, great laptop for everything!

This computer is great for price when it is on sale. Looked at higher model, however the next model with 4K screen has interface issues. I went with this model as the ram is upgradable to 32gb and hard drive could be swapped for SSD. This model also doesn't give 4K interface problems. The two factory complaints is non dual channel ram and no SSD so very slow to boot up. Asus put a 5400 HD inside which is strange considering other specs. Not a full gaming computer but very close for money and still get folding screen of 2-1 system. Battery is maxed at 3.5 hours unless u stay in power saver mode. Again if on sale good value.

I bought this to replace my old laptop that had burned out. I'm an author and editor and use my laptop as my primary computer every day. In many respects, it does what I need it to do. It's fast and has more than enough memory for my needs. The touch screen is a nice feature. I needed a full keyboard with ten key, and I like the configuration of this one. It's well placed so it's comfortable to use. The laptop has a very lovely look in general (though, see below) and the screen is just beautiful. I'm in love with the graphics card. I needed that feature not for gaming but so I could hook it up to my large monitor when I'm working at my desk at home. I like the backlit keyboard too. It's a nice, soft light that isn't off-putting. After some initial hassles getting rid of all the software bloat and eliminating some glitchy driver issues with my existing system (monitor, wireless ergonomic keyboard, printer), things seem to be operating fine. I'm only giving this three stars because even though this is a brand new computer (significantly updated, since my old one was six years old), I'm already wishing I had purchased a different one. I was excited about the flip to tablet feature, but this laptop is way too heavy to make that at all practical. Even using it in laptop mode, on my lap, when I'm away from my desk (probably at least half of my working hours), I get frustrated with it. The case is so slick it's constantly wanting to slide down my legs in all but a few carefully balanced positions. Additionally, while the casing looks very lovely, it picks up EVERY single fingerprint and is SO obvious. I'm constantly wiping it, and yet the second I touch it, it's already starting to look dirty. I've never had this problem with any of the laptops I've used before and it's driving me crazy. The touchpad is a little problematic too. For the most part, it's fine, but when I need precision to click on a small item (say, a guideline) it's a hassle trying to get the pointer to stay where I want it. It keeps "floating" past the object I need to select. I've tried adjusting the settings several times and it seems to do little good. I've even had my resident computer experts (read: my kids) take a look at it and they can't get it to do what I want either. It's to the point where I'm basically rearranging my schedule so that I'm doing certain kinds of work only at home so I can use my wireless mouse. I shouldn't have to do that. I had no trouble with this on my old laptop. Bottom line: I wish I could get a different one, but with the investment I made, I'm committed to this one for awhile.

My 4 year old Asus truck laptop finally bit the dust, Windows 10 did not help. So it was time to get a new one. I was looking at a couple of dual use laptops and didn't even realize that Asus had jumped in full force on that end. I needed a computer that could do multimedia decoding and also run all my business software. It only has a 940 Nvidia card in it but it still chews up stuff like finally archiving Star Wars Despecialized which can be pretty taxing. The only thing I changed was I bought a 1tb SSD to speed boot time. 2tb drive was only a 5400 rpm so boot was on the slow side. Changed to a pretty simple Sandisk Extreme 2.Super fast now! Did not need 2tb on board as I use external drives regularly. Also it is super light, has usb-c, thunderbolt and USB 3.0 ports. I almost forgot, newest 6th gen Intel I7. No Blu-ray drive but an LG external worked beautifully plug and play. One thing I wish it did have was drive access ports. I had to remove the whole back cover to replace the drive. It is metal so there is no worry about cracking it. One other thing to note is the takedown screws are torx bits so keep that in mind if SSD replacement enters your mind. Battery life can be on the shorter side but it is a dual use with a dedicated graphics card not on board. This is well worth the money as ASUS has always stood behind their products.

Even the geek squad was excited when I brought it in to have the software downloaded on it that they got to play with one of the newest computers out there. It has worked excellent , top speed , more memory than other computers can even dream of, and all of the top up to date features . Very user friendly and easy to set up. Make sure you get the geek squad protection though. We got a virus the first day before we downloaded the anti virus program on it , and geek squad was very efficient to help, hardly any wait on the phones either

I really enjoy using this laptop. I was impressed with the loading speed and the memory size on the computer. It has 2 terabytes of hard drive space and 8 gb of RAM making it ideal for just about any task for college students and for most gamers. The computer is also touch screen making it ideal for use when the mouse pad decides to not be user friendly, as it does on most computers every once in a while. The one drawback is that this model does not have a cd drive and could use one for gamers and for watching DVDs on the go however now a days most things are streamed or downloaded so it was not an important option to me

For the price, an i7 with 8g ram and decent graphics, not bad...I agree with some others that the power button is in an odd location, but I assume that is because of the fact that you can flip the screen and make it like a tablet. Unlike a tablet, though, it does blow hot air out the vents in the back, which can be a bit uncomfortable in "tablet mode". But that mode came in real handy on a plane. Metal case means it's a bit heavy, but it also feels more solid, well-built I guess. I like this laptop, so far it's worked very well for me. Plays COD BO3 just fine, graphics are crisp. I would purchase this one again.

Overall I'm pretty impressed with this laptop. It's pretty and sleek, and although large, it isn't terribly heavy. It runs quite well too. I bought this laptop so I could have a laptop to use a personal computer and for its ability to handle games like Skyrim. It plays Skyrim beautifully and I haven't had any major problems in the few months since I've had it. I'm not super knowledgeable about computers, so I can't really comment on the specs. There are a couple things stopping this from being 5 stars. (1) No CD/DVD slot. I still buy CDs & DVDs, so I wish it had a built-in slot. I bought an external CD/DVD player, so it's fine, but it was a bit annoying to have to spend more money on something I feel should have already been part of the system. (2) Screen glare. I don't remember having it this bad on any of my previous laptops... but it can be a bit annoying. Not the biggest problem in the world, but sometimes when I'm streaming, it can be irritating. (3) The touchpad isn't the greatest. My old laptop had separate buttons for the right/left buttons, which was nice. Sometimes I click without realizing I'm too far to the right and end up right-clicking, or even when double clicking outside the buttons, which should work as a regular left-click, nothing happens, or when I specifically right-click (even within the bounds of the right button), it reacts as if I've left-clicked. I open a lot of things in new tabs, so sometimes it's annoying to have it open in the same tab. (4) The speakers... They're under the computer, which can muffle the sound (I have a little fan that raises the body of the computer, so it's not that bad), and the speaker quality is also pretty low. The sub-woofer that came with the laptop makes it better, but It's just another thing I have to plug into the laptop. Not bad with the sub-woofer, just an extra piece. These aren't huge issues, just small annoyances. Overall I would recommend this laptop to people looking for a good quality machine capable of handling games like Skyrim. Just be aware that these little problems do exist that keep the computer from being excellent.

Overall it's a very sound laptop. The touchscreen works very well, and runs as smooth as ice. The only issue I do have is it doesn't run some PC games as well as advertised per the salesman at the store I purchased it at. I know laptops aren't meant for such, but that was a very big let down for me since it was a decided factor in my purchase. The price is great; there's not a lot of other computers you can get for the same quality for the same price.

As far a the laptop, the 2-1 capability is awesome, touchscreen and backlit keys are great. Super memory and speed. Classy design and finish, Speakers are the only thing that lacks.
