I was initially taken aback by the size of the lock. It is an imposing lock to be sure, however there is a lot of tech in there, not to mention the 4 'AA' batteries and motors, sensors and the like. Once installed and set up (I also have the August Connect WiFi AP"s) I have found the lock to be reliable and dependable. The geo-fence works perfectly every time. I know when my family comes and goes, and I can be sure that the doors are locked from anywhere. Unlike other smart lock WiFi AP's there is no monthly subscription fee and setup is a breeze, even with secure WLAN encryption. I have read several negative reviews from those who have misaligned doors, latches etc. I'm sure the intent of the August Lock is not to correct deficiencies with the door, but to augment properly working doors. I had to do some aligning, as well as replacing some aged hardware, but the investment was well worth it. My only gripe is that the battery cover falls off from time-to-time, unless of course I want it to. Then it seems to hang on for dear life! Otherwise a worthwhile investment. I have two of them.

Good Lock for Tech/Readers

Let me clear this is up at the beginning, I'm a very patient person that is a lot about home automation (Nerd) and loves to read and loves challenges so this review will be just a tad bias.
After reading prior reviews I was skeptical of purchasing the smart lock but after doing some research and reading the full instructions on August homepage and seeing it works with ADT security I decided to purchase the lock. Once getting the lock home, I was already comfortable with the set-up and jumped right in which was a breeze and when I finished I had a minor wait for the firmware to update which gave me time to clean-up.
Once it was set-up I was ready to go with geo-fencing and virtual keys for friends and family and my favorite the auto-unlock. I have only had one problem with the lock when it took about 25 seconds to find the lock which I didn't have a real problem with. I placed my lock in the garage connecting the garage and my kitchen so when I pull in the lock auto unlocks. I can't speak for others when it comes to certain problems but I would suggest going to the homepage of August and read the installation instructions, if the phone being used is compatible in regards to software and most of all be patient as this is a fairly new product and there is growing pains as we the consumer will accept new products without much testing prior to it's release. That's why the four stars as even I've had problems and know nothing is prefect, it does what it's basically intended for but there is much room for growth.

After reviewing various smart locks, I decided to give the August a try. The installation was quite easy but a firmware update right out of box took longer than I would have expected.
The lock itself operates well, however my Nexus 6 as well as my wife's Galaxy S4 seem to have trouble connecting on the first try. Sometimes it takes several retries once the app is open before the phone and lock syncs.
When it's connected, it works great; I wish the device was a little quicker to establish a connection.

Just bought my first home! and i have always been a bit of a techie so when i saw this and how if also connects to my Nest thermostat i just bought as well i know i had to have it! it was really easy to install other than the fact that the house i purchased the deadbolt was a off-brand and did not work with this so i had to buy a new door set. But i love it! i love seeing who and when people come in and out of the house! great product!

Very good product for tech friendly people. Instructions were a little lacking at least for my taste but their tech support assisted me. I liked the fact that I can provide entry to the people that work in my house and that I don't have to worry if I locked the door or not. I can set it up so that it locks automatically after so many minutes. This is important for me as I age and tend to forget things.

Two Problems:
1) The auto unlock doesn't always work. The first few weeks were hit and miss. Recently though, it is almost 100%. Not sure what changed.
2) If the deadbolt isn't lined up correctly, it won't lock. This is probably correctible, but for now, I have to pull on the door to get it to lock. But if I ever need to lock my door while away, I'm SOL. I don't have the connect, so it is not a problem yet.
Quick example of why I love this product:
We went away for the holidays and left a key with the neighbor to take care of our cats. The next day we got a call from the neighbor saying the key didn't work. Not sure what we would have done if not for this product. I sent her an August "key" and voila! Cats survived.

Nice, quality lock. Invisible to the outside. The future of home locks. Price seems expensive, but I believe the company is driving toward leadership and quality. The iPhone app is not bad. I'm hoping for continued updates to the app. Updates to the Lock and app since purchase have fixed intermittent issues. I would recommend purchase of the August Connect wifi device ($50 ) to control functionality outside of home including issuing virtual keys. I don't understand, however, why the wifi device costs so much extra and is not sold in the store, alongside the Lock. Overall, we like the device- appearance, features, functionalities. I'm hoping for continued updates and device sophistication enhancements.

I am pretty happy with this product so far. We added the wifi unit and really appreciate being able to lock and unlock the door remotely as well. And the August will usually unlock the door automatically when I arrive to the house. That's a good feature. I guess my only complaint is that sometimes the unit takes a few more seconds than I want it to take to communicate with my phone when I'm trying to leave the house. I'm still trying to figure out if this is my phone or the August. I have a new-ish iPhone 6. But, anyway, it's not so long that I dislike the product, just want it to be faster.

Installation was simple, had a lot of trouble calibrating it initially.. the android software may be to blame.. Had some issues, but worked thru them and got success after some frustration.
Have it for a few months now, somethings are good.. the auto unlock feature works great.. some not so good.. sometimes it wont communicate to the phone and you find yourself hitting the button on the phone longer than it would have taken you to open with a key..
Overall good products, needs to mature a bit.

Works as advertised. Things to know. If you need to pull the door in order for the deadbolt to work, then this won't work for you. If you use a lock on your handle, then not for you since this only adjusts the deadbolt. The Bluetooth connection out of the box was a little slow but with the recent firmware upgrade, it's very quick. The auto unlock feature is great.

This lock was great and because it can be installed OVER an already installed deadbolt, I give it 4 stars. However, since I was having a new house built, I didn't need a product that went OVER a deadbolt. I ended up changing to another Bluetooth installed deadbolt that was the entire lock instead of an addition to an existing deadbolt. While I didn't keep this product, it was a GREAT product and for most people this would be prefect to add Bluetooth unlocking ability to existing deadbolts.

This device is really cool, quite straighforward to assembly IF your locker is fully compatible to it. In my case, my locker was filled under their compatibility list and because of the thickness of my door, the metalic tail didn't reach the lock.
Tried to reach their support several times, no luck. Emailed them, no answer. In the end went to home depot and managed to fix the problem myself.
After that, got one august connect who allows me to manage the door remotely. It's kinda laggy, but works properly.
The only thing that concerns me is their lack of connectivity with other stuff, like wink or smartThings. But at least it integrates with my nest stuff.

I tried to replace my Kevo lock with this one because the Kevo is slow. This one is just as bad, but a little worse, you need to take your phone out of your pocket, open the app, wait for it to connect, then open the lock. All this while you are standing in the rain in front of your locked door. It feels like forever.
The other big issue is that the automatic lock feature works 99.99% of the times, which is great, except for that 1 time when it doesn't and you leave the door unlocked, in reality that means that I need to wait 30 seconds to make sure it did in fact lock it, I can't risk it, this is something I need 100% reliability.
I still have it installed, but I use the key to open it, I don't have time to wait for the app ...
There is an auto-unlock feature which only works on iOS and is extremely unreliable, in reality it is only for when you arrive home from work, not when you approach the door after throwing out the trash ...
Sorry, I hate giving a bad review. I'll fix it by saying the design is great, the build quality solid, and installation takes 1 minute, very well done.

This lock comes in handy when you have to run out and walk the dog, etc - however it does take a minute to connect to Bluetooth. I usually start trying to connect before I get right up to the door. Also I don't like that you have to buy the extra Connect box in order for it to work remotely.

I have read previous reviews concerning the lag in the lock responding and if you are wanting something which opens in matter of seconds then this is not for you. It does not take more than 20 seconds for me most times but I use this for convenience of not giving keys to my children's nanny and my house keeper. I can set a schedule for them and not worry about people having access when they should not.
It also allows for my children to not have to remember their keys when going to their friends or out. They never forget their phones and so I do not have to worry.
Though I would say I think the firmware needs to be updated since I have experienced at times the lock being unresponsive.
Over all pleased and it does what I want it to do.
