Good movie based on a Manga and a Anime, and sometimes really look like one. Lot of blood and great characters.

I never got to follow the whole series, but I actually used to read Blade of the Immortal when Dark Horse comics first began publishing the manga in serialized comic form. It had amazing art work, very cool writing, character design, lots of brutal and heavy moments, and all the samurai awesomeness you could want this side of Lone Wolf & Cub. This film does as much to capture the entire first major arc of the story as anything could do in a feature length run time. It lacks a little bit of the "poetry" found in the manga, but it absolutely captures the look, the action, the characters, the concepts and the story. The fight sequences range from immensely epic bloodbaths, to intimate duels, and tense stand offs. This was advertised as Takashi Miike's 100th film, and I was shocked that I'd only seen maybe 10 of his films in such a large body of work. Was a huge fan of IZO before, another samurai-oriented film, but this one might be my favorite of his. I enjoyed the movie so much that I decided to go back and get the steelbook, which looked particularly cool with great cover art, nice gloss, and a sturdy feel. Highly recommended for anyone that likes slightly offbeat Asian cinema, Takashi Miike films, live action manga/anime adaptations (by the far one of the very best I've seen), or just really solid samurai films with a bend more towards action and style than the pensive, Kurosawa-esque refrain.

I really need to rewatch this movie because it was a blast. Miike knows how to make a solid samurai flick. This manga adaptation is very good with some great fight scenes.

I have collected all the comic book format re-releases from Dark Horse Comics. Now the series is only released in graphic novel/manga format. I’ve been a fan since issue #1. I was initially expecting to be disappointed but I was pleasantly surprised. The director makes great movies so I was pleased to know that the same director behind “13 Assassins” also directed this movie. I enjoyed it but it would have been great as a series because there’s so much more story missing.

I thoroughly enjoyed this film, but then again I grew up a fan of Japanese anime and manga. Some scenes may make a Western Audience go "What?", but remember that that period was steeped in tradition and strife. Samurai adhered to Bushido... honor even when their masters had none. That being said... there is plenty of "Over The Top" Goodness here. You cannot go wrong with this purchase. I'm even watching it again now. :)

I bought this movie because it has the steel case and I thought it ought to be good. I did not do research first and bought it on impulse. The movie is surprisingly good and then I find out that the actor and the actress are very famous in Japan. The script is good and the flow of the story is excellent. There are quite a few bloody schemes so not for kids for sure - highly recommended!

If you were a fan of Miike's 13 Assassins, then this film is for you. The main guy kills like over 500 enemies and the bloody action bonanza doesn't stop there. There are so many characters with so many advanced weapons its enough to make you wonder where they hide all that by just wearing a kimono. Steelbook is icing on the cake.

Takashi Miike is one of the most prolific film directors in the world and with over 100 films to his credit, he is bound to have some interesting adaptations of popular manga like this story, he does a solid job with the material. Extremely violent and long, it’s worth watching for any Japanese film fan of these types of movies.

This is a wild ride through mysticism and bushido that defies description. A swordsman that can't die fights a multitude of opponent's trying to protect the life a young girl. Kinetic pace, great action set pieces this is a must have for martial arts fans. Especially those who love swordplay.

This is a beautiful steel with very cool artwork on the back side as well. The movie is extremely funny (albeit bloody) as supernaturally cursed swordsmen duel royalty and each other with sharp swords and even sharper words. The teenage girl is wonderfully portrayed by an excellent young actress.

This is a review of the steelbook and quick thoughts on the movie. Miike managed to capture the feel of the manga/anime with this live action adaptation. Great acting and fight scenes. A bit long, but the ending makes up for the slow middle act. Steelbook is High gloss and gorgeous.

It's over the top, and lots of fun. Doesn't quite reach the heights of the Rurouni Kenshin trilogy, but really good all the same. Good fights, lots of action. Maybe a little confusing if you are not familiar with the source material.
