Exciting Product / Not so Great Business Partner?

Took about 2 months to be able to purchse this lens from BestBuyOnline trying to use the Financing plan and waiting for site reps to respond to promises of "we'll get back to you as we fix your tech support issue.... not sure I would try to purchase from bestbuyonline again, but in the end, if you have determination, where there is a will there is a way. Firstly despite what the bbönline website posts, and what the bestbuyonline phone reps adamantly declared about what comes with the lens, what you ACTUALLY GET IN THE BOX IS: Front Lens Cap E-67U, Rear Lens Cap E, Lens Case LP-1219, Lens Hood ET-73 + 100MM 2.8L IS USM MACRO LENS. Be aware as you cannot pick the lens up at the store, you can only have it shipped via FedEX (who delivers only btwn 9-5, and not on Sat/Sun). So be prepared to receive your "we'll try again to deliver receipt". But call right away, and tell them you'll pick it up. My box was crushed when I received it from the FedEX office, I worried about if the lens itself was broken.... it wasn't... Had to be as a result of the Canon Styrofoam and the lens build quality. The Tripod Mount D is not included with the purchase, but the lens bag DOES fit the lens with the Tripod mount attached !! Though I must say, I would have desired a sturdier case than the one that ships with the lens (direct from Canon in fact). This lens is incredibly sharp, and the contrast is astounding! It's sharper at 100 2.8 than the new (and old) Canon EF 70-200 2.8L Is II USM!!! I cant put it down (unless i have too :) ) When working at Macro distances, you can still get a pretty clean pic with the IS; but the apeture is actually equivalent to a f 5.6, hence despite the IS, a tripod would be ideal. The min focus distance is about 11" from focal plan. Yet, (in real useage situations) I am able to use autofocus when the object is about 1 to 1.25" from the front tip of the lens hood (when attached)... 100 ISO!!..handheld. Remarkable !!! (I'm attached to a Rebel T1i). (see sample pic attached - only stove top light was on in room) Take advantage of BestBuys 18month Financing if you need (or must) to get it from Best Buy Online, but be mindful that BBO is not the only place to get a good (or better) deal... but whatever you do, if you're an insects/ flowers/ product photographer... get this lens. Its the right price for the right use.

This is a solid, high-quality lens that definitely deserves the "L" series designation from Canon. The auto focus system is very fast and very quiet. The added bonus of image stabilization makes this lens much more versatile as a general 100mm prime aside from its macro abilities. I've been able to get great shots with this hand held that wouldn't be possible on the non-IS version. IMO, the extra $$ for this lens vs the non-IS version of this lens is worth it, since you get IS and a lens hood. The hood, btw, has a more kind of "matte" finish on the outside, that won't scratch or print up like the other Canon hoods you have to buy separately (this is just a personal pet peeve of mine with hoods I bought for my non-L lenses). The biggest drawback to this lens is the new "Ring D" tripod ring Canon released for this lens. It's not available at most camera websites. Sites that do have it want near $200! Older rings are compatible, but you must use the Ring D if you use a vertical grip on your camera. For the price of this lens, the ring should be included, thus the 4 stars for "Value for Price". This is a knock to Canon, not Best Buy.

I'm a wedding photographer and highly prefer to use Canon prime lenses. I had the outstanding Canon 135mm L f/2 as my telephoto prime but I felt that it put me a little too far back, away from the action. After reading about the Canon 100mm f/2.8L IS macro, I figured this might be a solution for several things I need on busy wedding shoots. I was pretty much blown away with this lens right out of the box. For the price, this Canon 100mm is a winner....as one would expect from Canon L lenses. Well built, very sharp, has image stabilization, not too heavy and bulky, and of course, it has wonderful macro capabilities. I think the AF was a little faster on the 135mm but nonetheless, the 100mm focuses sufficiently fast enough. For macro and portraits during a wedding day, the slightly slower AF doesn't prove to be any hindrance. For lightning fast AF, my 24mm, 50mm and 85mm take care of the action. I actually ordered it online from Best Buy for pickup at one of their stores near a wedding venue where I had a shoot that evening. As promised, it was ready for pick up when I got there and I checked out in about 5 minutes. I put the lens right to use and haven't looked back. Very happy with the 100mm macro, it's a keeper!

I practiced with and started learning the lens in the house (flowers, leaves, cat). Then took it on a trip to Bosque del Apache NWR, NM along with landscape and telephoto lenses. There I shot some wildflowers, butterflies, lizards and landscape with the Canon 2.8L 100mm IS Macro. My initial impression is that it is a super macro and easy to learn. The auto focus works very good and is fairly fast, but you have to have it SET TO THE CORRECT RANGE. Image Stabilazation is a big plus, especially shooting moving targets that don't stay put for more than a few seconds. It takes experimentation with shutter speed, ISO and aperature combinations (still learning) to capture the results you desire. Patience is a virtue. I was very pleased with the landscape and results of more distant subjects (birds and lizards). Very nice star pattern of the sun through tree leaves. Bottom line:Based on my intial impression, I highly recommend this lens for macro photography, especially if this will be your only macro lens.

I ordered this lens online and picked it up in store yesterday. Upon first use, I fell in love with it. Someone mentioned in a YouTube video that this lens takes a while to find the focus, and I agree with that as I seem to be having the same problem; but once you get it to focus on your subject, this lens creates stunning photos. It is pretty heavy in my opinion being paired with the 6D Mark II. I think that this lens is good for portraits as well as capturing close-up shots. For portraits, you will have to stand farther to really get someone in the picture. Kudos to Canon for including the hood and lens case/bag.

I used to have the 100mm Macro Non L lens. THat was my most favorite lens. But got infected with Fungus. So I got rid of that one and bought this one. I already carries great reviews. Using it just confirmed what the world says. The lens is Superb. When IS is on, it creates a humming sound if you move or shake the lens, a little annoying but normal as per a lot of owners. Other than that this is great. IS definitely helps compared to the Non L lens. To me, both were kind of identical with respect to image quality and focusing speed. Bouquet and IS are improvement over the other, build quality is also to notch. It is not a heavy lens however. I tried a few portraits and macro shots and all came good. Is it worth the extra $$$? I dont know yet. I am yet to explore it more, I will have to wait for summer to explore the flowers and insects, I am sure will be more impressed then. So far excellent

For the price of $799.99 plus tax is not cheap at all. But once I started to put this lens to the test, I can't let go of using it. I use this one mainly for flower photography and it did so well. I can separate my subjects from the background, in other words, it has a very good shallow depth of field although f2.8 is not as good as f1.2. What I'm impressed with is the sharpness of the canon lens most specially when using to a full frame camera. I can't go wrong with it and of course the very near distance of the lens from the subject is totally awesome. I totally agree with a lot of photographers that most prime lenses are sharper tha most zoom lenses. The only burden of owning one is the price. But with this canon 100mm f2.8 IS USM, I can't go wrong with it. I can also use as a portrait lens. But if there is a canon macro lens with a longer focal length and a wider aperture for the future, then it would be one the most beautiful things canon will ever do so.

I purchased this lens as my second L-Series lens but as my first macro lens. I have been wanting to do more macro shooting (I love flowers and insects) so I decided to start with a good lens. I have not been disappointed with this lens. I have taken some of the most beautiful up-close pictures of my life with this lens. It is as if you can reach out and touch the items in the pictures. The detail contained in the pictures are spectacular. I am not a pro photographer but feel as though with this lens I can compete with anyone. This is a must have lens if you truly want to get into macro photography. My wife thinks the lens is heavy but I done think it is at all.

Quite stunning. The pictures it can take, handheld with flash are simply amazing. I am quite pleased with it so far. I have noticed a few times it fails to focus - but that is usually due to my not having set the "range" switch properly - or I am too close to the subject. The shots attached here were taken in flourescent lighting, flash, with lens hood removed of a vase of flowers I bought for my wife. These are amoung the first macro images that I have taken. The images were reworked in LR just a bit.

    Best lens for macro photography!

This is the best lens for what it does which is macro photography. One of the reviewers here, XTremeD, said "Limited in what you can do with it other than closeups". Well, I guess he had no idea what this lens is for before making his purchase. This is a macro lens so of course it is for close up, small objects and extreme close up photos. If you need a one do all lens then get a 24-105mm or something similar.

This Lens is awesome and holds up to the hype. It shows a 1 to 1 Macro ratio and provides great Bokeh/background blur for up close and Portrait photos. The IS makes hand holding a breeze...I do almost all my shooting hand-held and definitely need the IS, and with this being an L lens as identified by the red ring, it becomes a must have for your camera bag and you will not regret it. I’ve added 2 photos taken with this lens below...

    Great for closeups

I read a few of these reviews that said "Great for portraits and weddings". Please tell me how you would shoot a wedding with this lens. Like I said .... "Great for closeups". Ultrasonic very quiet, the IS is always a plus for sure. I will probably keep the lens, but the narrow range makes the lens limited in what it can do. Sure wish they would keep a better selection of lens in the stores (no need to carry the high-end lenses, just a good cross-section), so you could handle and see it before you make the purchase. But the image quality is fantastic, no doubt about it. *How are you supposed to rate the "Durability" this soon? Need to see how it stands up to the test of time to give accurate review.

I would say personally this lens is a must have in your kit. When on a shoot or just walking around, I normally keep 3 lenses on me about 98% of the time. I have a 50mm f/1.8, a 70-200mm f/2.8 L mk II, and then this 100 mm macro. A lot of time people associate macro lenses with shooting small thing or getting up close to something, but this as a portrait lens is outstanding. I also shoot videos from time to time and the ability to get close and shoot some B roll as well as this lens having image stabilization is amazing.

One Of The Sharpest Lens In The Entire Canon Line Up! The Canon 100mm Macro 2.8 Is not only a sharp lens it's one of the most affordable L Series Lens Out There! The focus system works great and the bokeh at 2.8 is buttery soft. The lens has a quality build as is standard with canon L Lens. This lens will open up new worlds to you as a photographer as it will allow you to get closer & therefore see things you've never been able to see before. You should not and will not regret getting this lens. it is a must have for any photographer especially anyone at any level who plans or is shooting Macro!

This lens allows you to focus on the tiny details like flowers, insects, etc. I personally bought it because I had a project on which I needed to focus on the most specific details for the perfect photo, even though it wasn't related to the elements I mentioned before. I've heard from other photographers who'd used it before that it's great for video stabilization, but I personally haven't tried it yet. Overall, it's an excellent Canon product. Highly recommended!

I would recommend this to a friend, but advise them to try to save money however they can. This lens is alright, but I think Canon should update it. It has a pretty bad case of chromatic aberration, so if you're taking a macro picture (or using it as a prime lens for portraiture, etc) and there's bright light, don't be surprised if you get weird colors showing up. Taking a picture of your flowers on a sunny day? GUARANTEED. That being said, this is a pretty nice lens otherwise! Just kind of outdated glass, I think.

Bought this for detail wedding shots. Also found this is a very nice portrait lens. Doing 5 weddings this year, but haven't had a chance to use this much for macro yet... but I do a lot of portrait photography, and this lens is super sharp. It has a long focus throw, so it is not super fast focusing, but is also not slow... and the focus seems to be very accurate.

I had about 7 L lenses for all kinds of shooting; but never had a dedicated macro lens. I was using one of my L lenses with extension tubes, which was doing a great job but needed something a little more versatile. So I borrowed my brothers Canon 100mm macro non L which did a good job; but when I chose to purchase one I went with the L version because of the image stabilization, ultra sonic motor and built quality. After using this a few weeks I must say this has to be one best L lenses I've ever shot with.

Ok, so I purchased this lens for obvious reasons, I want to shoot some up close and personal shots. Today I took it out with my t6i, which isn't the best camera Canon has to offer, but it's a decent body. Regardless, attached is a photo from a t6i at iso 160, f2.8, 1/125 with very minimal Lightroom editing. This is easily going to become my "go-to" lens. The lens has very rich bokeh, and works great in low light situations. I can't wait to see what else I can do with it.

I love this lens!!!! Tack sharp and IS works great! This lens can be used for more than just macro photography. I've used it for everything from landscapes to portraits. Autofocus may be a bit slower than some of the non-macro lenses with a similar focal length but using the focus limiter switch greatly helps with focus speed. If you are looking for a macro lens and shoot Canon get one.
