PRO: Light weight, fast focusing (with R6), less expensive than professional EF L-version (EF 100-400 L IS USM ii), compact, great option for beginners CON: F8 at 400mm, not an professional L-lens (but still good quality), plastic

    The Little Tele-Zoom That Could

I've owned this lens for over a year now which has given me plenty of time to assess it. I also own the much more expensive RF 100-500. It may seem odd to own, but I think not because the 100-500, while "light and compact" for it's range, becomes heavy with long hikes, which is why I bought the 100-400. The build quality of the 100-400 is what one would expect of a lens at this level. It's a hunk of plastic with minimal weather sealing. Image quality though isn't hugely that different from the 100-500 though. It's a tad less sharp and crisp -- nothing that can't be fixed when editing if that is part of your workflow. And autofocus is quite responsive thanks to it having a USM motor. What I don't like about the lens is the same thing I don't like about any non-L RF lens - there is no separate manual focus ring. Instead the control ring doubles as manual focus too and you have to pick one via the camera's menu or on bodies like the R7 the MF/AF switch on the front of the camera. I've used the lens on both the R5 and R7 and while it's good on the R5 I think it's best paired with crop sensor bodies like the R7 because of the 1.6x crop multiplier giving this lens and effective reach of 640mm. So who is this lens for? Two groups, I think. 1) anyone who doesn't want to spend a fortune on a tele-zoom but also doesn't want to sacrifice image quality or consider used lenses. 2) People who want to compliment their higher-end tele-zoom with a lighter, more compact model more appropriate for long hikes or places where a bigger lens would be uncomfortable, awkward or not allowed.

This is a great lens for the weight and price. It won't get the same performance as the much more expensive -- and significantly heavier -- RF 100-500, particularly as far as low-light performance and of course the extra 100mm at the upper end. That said, the autofocus is quite fast, and it's compatible with Canon's 1.4x and 2x teleconverters throughout its full zoom range, unlike the RF 100-500, whose compatibility begins at 300mm.

Purchased this for an Antarctica cruise. Picture quality is amazing if lighting is good. My day to day lens is an RFS 18-150 which is more convenient for day to day use. The autofocus sometimes goes to sleep and I try to focus on a high contrast scene to wake it up. Field of view is obviously narrower than my normal lens which requires frequent swapping of lenses when shooting scenery at different distances.

I’m really enjoying this lens. As someone who mostly shoots landscapes and abstract/ minimal nature photos, I love being able to zoom in and pick out compositions. The lens is also allowing me to start taking some better wildlife shots too, which is super exciting. When I’m not shooting video with the Canon R8, I’m using this lens for photography. It is important not to expect this lens to offer the same kinds of photos as the 100-500 or other higher end telephotos. It still takes excellent photos, especially of landscapes and probably larger animals. It is lightweight, feels good quality, and is fun to use.

The Canon 100to 400 zoom is light weight, very sharp, fast focus and very good image stabilization. The only down size is speed of the zoom lense. It starts at 5.6 f and tops off at 8 f. At 400mm. Would purchase again. Price was under $600, excellent value.

Very light lens for this focal range. I could walk around all day with this lens. I am impressed with image i get across its range. It is a fair weather lens as it has no weather seals.

I purchased this zoom lens to partner with my EOS R7. It gives you that extra reach for wildlife and, my favorite, capturing detailed moon pics. Images are crisp, but highly recommend using with a tripod for sharper images. Great lens on a budget!

I am very happy with my purchase! I needed a longer lens for shooting baseball games and this lens did not disappoint. It is quick to focus and small enough to carry on your neck. The price is great to considering lens prices.

I worried about the aperture. But lens is very sharp and high ISO image quality of R7 helps meditate lack of larger F stop. Focus is very quick.

Canon has again built a wonderful lens, sharp images, lite weight, and affordably priced. Don't let the plastic exterior fool you, it is a very sturdy well-built lens. Mounted on my Canon R, I can set the iso to "auto", aperture between 8 and 11 and not worry about noise in the image, thanks to Canons excellent engineering skills. The Canon R combined with the RF 100-400 f5.6-8 Telephoto Zoom Lens makes an excellent package for creative photography.

An absolutely amazing lens for the price. Lightweight for 100-400 mm telephoto. This lens really lets you reach out and grab some of those harder to get pics when approaching wildlife usually makes them flee.
