doesn't work right. keeps crashing

My son uses this for school. He said the onboard keyboard keeps going out as well as the onboard mouse. Tried plugging in a usb mouse and it worked for a while but the chromebook would crash when using anything plugged into the USB ports. We were told by tech support at Best Buy that for a Chromebook you can not plug anything into the USB ports or the onboard keyboard and/or mouse will not work. That makes no sense. Why have the USB slots if you can't use them. My other son who has a chromebook from school has had zero issues with his. I think this one is a dud.
