Solid, Top of the Line Laptop
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This Dell is my second 2-in-1 windows 10 laptop and is a solid choice for anyone, especially for users looking for the power and graphics to run any and everything at once. The graphics are top of the line and the 4k display is awesome -- although the 15.6 size and heft are worth considering, its not the most mobile laptop. There are a couple drawbacks that prevented this laptop from getting the full 5 stars -- The first is that I found the keyboard to be substandard compared to previous Dell's and Lenovo's. I have a strong preference for the ThinkPad keyboards so some of it is probably that personal preference -- but there are Alienware keyboards that I also find far superior. The second drawback is the lack of USB-C ports. This is the current standard and the work equipment I got last year came equipped so it was disappointing not to find it here. Lastly I was dissapointed with the touch-pen that comes included. This was a small concern as my use is not visual arts, so its almost a fourth pointing device to me after touchpad, external mouse and the touch screen standalone. I've used the surface pen and liked that more is all. Still, the SSD hard drive loads fast, all though you will need cloud accounts for full usability as mine only came with 256GB on board an no back up, the laptop has plenty of RAM, top of the line processor and an insane graphics card. The touchscreen is super responsive. Advanced applications run extremely smoothly! Overall this is a great laptop and a very reasonable price, don't let my minor nitpicks sway you against unless those are the specific make-or-break features you're looking for.

Worth consideration
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. On paper, the specs of this machine are very good. The 8550U is designed for everyday productivity, providing the perfect mix of performance and battery life. It is a quad core, 8 thread chip with a base speed of 1.8GHz and turbo boost up to 4.0GHz. It’s got 16gb ram which should be more than enough for general day to day computing and it has a 256gb SSD for storage. Overall build/feel This laptop is built like a tank. The metal body is well fitting and feels solid. The hinges are sturdy and feel like they will last a while, considering this is a two-in-one that folds the screen all the way back. The downside to this quality build is weight. This laptop is HEAVY. It is built to service double duty as a tablet but i would guess the tablet Moses carried down the mountain weighed less than this. While the screen has a minimal bezel, the 15.6 size makes it just too large and bulky to hold and use as a tablet for me. Screen The 4K display is a thing of beauty. Crisp and clear with vibrant colors. The screen is plenty bright. However, a panel of this size looks just as good with 1920x1080 when playing video. With the resolution of 3840x2160, you have to magnify the size of text to 200% (250% is recommended) to make it readable. Driven by an NVIDIA GeForce MX130 with the faster 2GB GDDR5 dedicated video memory seems better suited for productivity and some video than gaming. Mouse/trackpad The trackpad is responsive and gestures seem to work well so far. You have to go several layers deep in the settings to change some of the gestures but that's not the laptops fault. Keyboard The chiclet keyboard is backlit but missing a number pad. Travel is short but the keys have a good feel and feedback. Due to the lack of a number pad, the key spacing is a bit wider than most which makes it easier to type for people like me with larger fingers. Battery life Battery life without any saving settings is just over 4 hours, with battery saving i was able to extend it to about 7 hours. Stylus/Windows Ink The stylus works out of the box and is responsive. There is a sketchpad app included for drawing. It could be used like blank paper for written notes as well. Camera The camera has both an IR lens as well as a camera lens so it can be used for facial recognition to unlock the pc with windows hello. This was surprisingly accurate and worked well. It's a feature I am learning to love a lot, even more than the fingerprint sensor on my XPS. Sound Its a laptop with laptop sound. It's not the best i've ever heard but far from the worst. Observations The charger brick gets really hot, almost to to the point of concern, especially when you are working on the laptop and its charging at the same time. Speaking of heat, the bottom of the unit gets a bit warm but not unbearably so. I've read some reviews that say the cooling fans are loud but this is not my experience, when rendering video with Premiere Pro, the fans were no louder than the ambient noise. The 256gb SSD drive is nice but after the operating system, Adobe creative cloud and microsoft office, on-machine storage starts to come at a premium. Fortunately, according to the documentation, the SSDis user replaceable for those not afraid to work on their pc’s. Also, it appears, in Dell fashion, they use the same parts for several systems and it looks like the space where a physical hard drive would go is still available and the connecting cable is there too. Another issue i've experienced several times is the display going blank, especially when it seems it's thinking hard. Not sure if this is just a bad driver or a faulty product. Overall I really wanted to hate this laptop but i can't. It’s got a beautiful screen and decent sound. The facial recognition is my new best friend and typing is comfortable and easy. It's not the fastest pc i've ever used but i feel a lot of the slowness is caused by the antivirus and security software. It is more than capable of running Adobe Creative suite programs. As long as you know what you are looking for and don't have unrealistic expectations, this laptop will serve you well. Yes, I would recommend it to a friend.

Fast!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I am pleasantly surprised at how good this laptop is. Build quality is good and it doesn’t feel like cheap plastic. Initial setup was easy with Cortana and voice recognition worked well. I found that the camera allows facial recognition even in the dark to allow faster login. The 4k screen is beautiful. It's not edge to edge but pretty close and I didn't notice any ghosting in the screen when looking at it at night. There is some minor spotlighting from around the edge of the screen on dark images or video but it's better than most I’ve seen. It’s a touch screen and it comes with a stylus pen that runs on an AAAA battery. The pen is responsive, I didn’t have any issues using it and it was a nice addition. There is also an HDMI port to plug directly into a TV. There is enough memory to allow you to have many different programs open all at once without any issue. The processor is an Intel I7. That speaks for itself and the performance is great. The GeForce MX130 graphics chip isn't their top of the line for laptops but it's sufficient for minor gaming as long as you don't turn details all the way up. I would have preferred the MX150 at this price point but the MX130 will work for my needs. Usually the weak point in computers is the hard drive but this has a 256 GB SSD. The SSD is so much faster than a standard hard drive and the laptop is quick to start up and quick to open programs and quick to navigate through. It’s also quieter as you don’t have to listen to the hard disk spin and the only sound you hear is the sound of the fan for the processer. 256 GB isn't a lot of space but if you need more you can always get an external hard drive to hook up to one of the fast USB 3.0 ports. It doesn’t have a number pad but that would make the laptop wider and its current form factor is nice. Battery life is good and the power cord is sufficiently long enough for me to plug in and sit a short distance away from the outlet. Overall I really like this laptop. The only thing that I think would make it better would be a slightly better graphics chip like the MX150, which I think at this price point it should have come with.

Great laptop for the money
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a great laptop especially at the recently lowered price of $959. It has a 4K touch screen that displays vibrant colors with good contrast along with i7 processor, 16GB ram and 256GB solid state drive. With these specs, the laptop had no problem running 4K and even 8K videos on youtube however it did stutter quite a bit with 12K videos (yes there are a few on youtube and no internet speed isn't the issue; I have gigabit internet). It's a fast machine for most non-professional tasks.
